1/18/17 IMPT Math 64 Online Info
All info for our class, and how to enroll in the required online system called MyOpenMath is at https://sites.google.com/site/harlandclass/home/syllabi/sp17int
Make sure you enroll and are ready to start no later than Monday morning. The class is ready if you'd like to begin early, but I may not be answering questions on homework until school begins.
If you are on the wait list, write me ASAP for a permission number if you want to take the class.
If anyone replies to this email, be sure to sign the email with your first and last name. I cannot recognize students by email addresses.
We do not use a regular text. The bookstore has the packets (that I wrote and you will need to turn in) for this class. Alternately, you may print them. I earn no royalties for these. They are selling the packets at cost.
I'm looking forward to being your teacher, and having an awesome semester with all of you! If you have questions, please feel free to ask! I am there for you! It's a lot of time and work, but it will be so sweet if you go for it and reach your goals!
Math Rocks!
Happy New Year!
1/19/17 More Info: IMPT Math 64 Online Info
I've been getting questions that are answered in the syllabus and in MyOpenMath, so please open the link below, read the syllabus thoroughly, and carefully follow the directions to enrolling in MyOpenMath using the course ID I provide and your specific section number (see SURF for you 4 digit number) for the enrollment key. It is quick and easy to do and is free. Since this class is online, it's super important you read everything I post all the way through.
Once you are in MyOpenMath and enter the course, you will see this. Read Instructions for this Class. At bottom is information about where to turn in packets on campus, or how to send packets to me via mail. Scanning and emailing every page of each packet in order as one PDF is another option, but very time-consuming due to the number of pages.

1/23/16 IMPT Math 64 Online First Day
Hi all,
I'm sending this from SURF to all enrolled students in case anyone missed my previous emails.
For those of you already enrolled in MyOpenMath, and following the instructions for today, keep up the good work.
Today, everyone should go to https://sites.google.com/site/packet1int/home/p1videos to watch/transcribe the videos from 1.1, and do all problems in 1.1 of the Unit 1 packet. Then move on to 1.2. Complete 1.1-1.4 by Wednesday.
If you are not yet enrolled in MyOpenMath, do so immediately and no later than noon today, 1/23/17. All info for our class, the syllabus, announcements, and how to enroll in the online system called MyOpenMath (MOM) is at https://sites.google.com/site/harlandclass/home/syllabi/sp17int. Follow the instructions carefully for enrolling in MyOpenMath. The course ID is 18567 and your 4 digit section number (see SURF) is your enrollment key. It is free, quick and easy to enroll in MOM. Since this class is online, it's super important you read everything I post all the way through.
Read the announcements/emails I've already sent, especially the one I made on 1/19/17 (since it walks you through what to step by step after you log in) at https://sites.google.com/site/harlandclass/home/syllabi/sp17int/announcements.
We do not use a regular text. The bookstore has the packets (that I wrote and you will need to turn in) for this class. Alternately, you may print them. I earn no royalties for these. They are selling the packets at cost.
I'm looking forward to a great semester. Go for it and keep up!

1/25/17 Info
This is an email to everyone in the class. I hope you are all transcribing the video notes for 1.1-1.4 of the packet, and complete 1.1-1.4 of the packet by tonight so you can open the online HW and do HW 1. The videos are at https://sites.google.com/site/packet1int/home/p1videos
Please definitely read the Instructions for this Class link in MyOpenMath very carefully. It lets you know how to navigate through the class, what to do first, second, etc. Also, it's important to click on the forum link (top left) when you log in and read the questions other students are asking, and see my responses. Please use the forum for any question that is not personal. That is how you participate as a class. If you have a question, others might have the same one and benefit from my reply! Please utilize it.
Most of you completed HW 0 and I've graded most of question #1, and often provide feedback. You will see an asterisk if I wrote something to you. Check it out. For those of you who have not completed that intro assignment, it is due Friday, along with HW 1. If you do not get all problems in HW 1 done by Friday, click on Use Late Pass to get a 3 day extension.
I hope you are all having fun! Learning math is like anything else. If you put in the time, practice consistently and believe you can do it, you will get better at it. Think about anything you do well...you probably spent a lot of time doing that thing! There is no math gene. I got good at it by doing it! My parents both failed Elementary Algebra! It had nothing to do with having a math brain. Believe in yourself and absolutely GO FOR IT! Ask questions (mainly by using the forums in MOM) any time you need help or clarification. Email me if you have a personal question.
Have a wonderful day!

Hi FirstName LastName,
This is to all students. Save this email! Please make sure you are watching/transcribing the videos for each section assigned before doing the problems in the packet for that section. See my NOTE below for why this is important. Videos for Unit 1 are at https://sites.google.com/site/packet1int/home/p1videos
Label the top of a new page with the video label, then watch and copy in your own writing all examples and notes for each video, and keep these in your own notebook for your own reference.
For instance, 1.3 has 5 videos, so the top of each page should be listed this way: 1.3 SP1, 1.3 SP2, 1.3 D1, 1.3 F4, 1.3 F5. These are your class notes. You do not turn them in. After you have those 5 video notes in your notebook (spiral bound is probably convenient), then go to 1.3 in the packet and do the problems. Any videos in the packet with asterisks were on a video, so you can use those for reference and to check your work/answers.
Make sure you check all answers in the packet. The answers to Unit 1 are at https://sites.google.com/site/packet1int/home/solutions
After you complete 1.1-1.4 in the packet, do Online HW 1, which is due 1/27 unless you use a late pass. You should be done with 1.4 by today so you can open and complete the online HW on time.
Each Friday, start working on the next week's assignments. See the Schedule in each unit. Usually there are about 3 sections assigned each week, so if you do one a day--Mon, Tues, Wed, or do them Sat,Mon,Wed, you should be ready to open the online HW on Thursday and complete it by Friday. Don't put it off. Set aside at least 12 hours a week, broken up throughout the week, so you can keep up.
NOTE: I do not give points for watching/transcribing videos and keeping in a notebook. But it is very important to do that because taking notes in your own handwriting during lectures absolutely helps you process and learn. For this class, that means watching a video, and writing down all information, especially copying and doing all the examples shown on the videos. If you do this, these are notes and examples to look back at and try when studying for tests. Also, you will encounter many of the same exact problems (those with asterisks) when you complete those sections in the packet. So it will be a second time doing the same problem. This reinforces your understanding. And if you aren't sure how to do a problem with an asterisk, you can look right back in your notebook where you did it correctly while watching the video. So doing this is a very important step in learning, and keeps things organized. Furthermore, I'd suggest ALSO doing EACH example in a video on an index card or half sheet of paper. Write which video it is on, the directions and problem on one side, and write the solution with all steps on the other side. Later, mix these up and randomly try problems to study for a test! The more you practice doing problems, even if it is the same problem you've done before, the more likely you will do better on assessments. Many students have told me this is key for them.
If you post HW questions to the forum, please ask a question and be specific. Let me know your steps so far. Either I or other students will help!
Okay, make sure you complete HW 0 and HW 1 by Friday, and start on next week's assignment soon!
Below is the schedule for the first unit:
1/23: Open HW 0--due 1/27. Transcribe videos and complete 1.1-1.4 in packet by 1/26. Then open HW 1--due 1/27.
1/27: DUE DATE: HW 0 and HW 1
1/27: Transcribe videos and complete 1.5-1.7 in packet by 2/1. Then open HW 2--due 2/3.
2/3: DUE DATE: HW 2
2/3: Transcribe videos and complete 1.8-1.10 in packet by 2/8. Then open HW 3--due 2/10.
during test window. See Test Info for appt link and more info. Then open HW T1 Appt--due 2/8. HW T2 Appt, HW T3 Appt, and HW FE Appt are also available. You may schedule all test appointments for the semester now.
2/8: DUE DATE: HW T1 Appt
2/10: DUE DATE: HW 3
2/11-2/16: Take Test 1 during appt time. Submit Unit 1 no later than noon on 2/21 to 3600 Building at Oceanside or Administration Building at San Elijo. Make sure your name and my name is on packet.
Take Care,
JH
1/30/17
To be assured of not being dropped, log in ASAP, and make sure you complete HW 1 if you haven't finished it! See below about opening it and still working on it.
To help anyone who had trouble using the late passes, I changed the due dates for both HW 0 and HW 1 to this Thursday, 2/2/16. Almost everyone already completed both of these assignments, and many of you have comments from me on HW 0. You can click the asterisk, I think, in the grade book to see my comments to you. HW 2 is still due this Friday.
The drop date is this Friday, and I'll be dropping people who are not following the attendance policy below:
Attendance Policy: Attendance is monitored by your verified participation in class each week in the following way. You may be dropped if you do not follow the requirements below. Contact me any time you are unable to fulfill this policy.
1. Log in to our MOM class often to read announcements and check for forum posts or messages. You must submit answers to HW problems due each week. Logging in without answering HW problems, using a late pass, opening a HW assignment but not submitting any answers, clicking other links or watching videos does NOT count toward attendance. You should spend a minimum of 4 hours a week in MOM unless you complete all HW ahead of the due date.
1/31/17
This is a clarification to everyone about emails you receive from me. I usually begin with the first and last name you used in MOM because some of you reply without signing your first and last name. So if I get a reply from you, I can look at the original email to tell who it's from.
Most emails are general announcements with important info to the whole class. The subject line will usually state Math 64 Info or Math 64 Announcement, etc. If it's personal email, it will usually start something like "I'm writing you because..." and I'll let you know why I'm writing you--maybe you haven't logged on, or maybe you need to complete a particular assignment, etc.
I hope this clears up any confusion! Anyone who has completed HW 1 is up-to-date, will not be dropped. Keep up the good work!!!
If, on the other hand, you WANT to drop this or any other course without a W on your transcript, this Friday is the deadline to do that.
My direction from the previous email on was meant to be a reminder to those who had not completed HW 1. Completing a math online HW assignment is required to show online participation/attendance in this class. The State of California and college policy states anyone in an online class must submit an online assignment in the subject (for instance, HW 1, which is math) to be considered participating in the class. Teachers are required to drop students not doing that before the drop deadline. So if you haven't completed HW 1 (only 10 questions), please log on and do so ASAP. There isn't time to lag behind in this class. HW 2 has many more problems, and that assignment is due Friday.
Starting this Friday, the APC will allow you to call them, email them, walk in, or log in to their online system to schedule your tests. The first test must be taken on the dates listed in Test Info. They are also listed in each unit folder in the HW folder.
