Late Pass Info may change from semester to semester.
Spring 2020: Each late pass extends the due date of an online quiz by 48 HOURS from original due date, but students are expected to answer at least SOME QUESTIONS by the ORIGINAL DUE DATE to show participation/attendance. The new due date simply shows how long you have to work on it until you'd need another late pass. Multiple late passes on each quiz are allowed. So if you want to extend it to 10 days after the original due date, you would need to use 5 late passes. You have plenty of late passes. On Quizzes 2-13, each problem submitted correctly after the due date while using a late pass mode has a 25% penalty. You may not use a late pass on a forum or a quiz. Those are final due dates.
For attendance/participation and to be assured of not being dropped, students are required to open and submit at least one problem in each Quiz by its ORIGINAL due date. Clicking a late pass but not submitting an answer to a quiz problem by the original due date does NOT fulfill this requirement.
You earn full credit on every problem in an online quiz that is done correctly by its original due date. If you do not earn 100% by the original due date and want to earn more credit on a quiz after the due date, use a late pass--do not open it in Review Mode or you can't earn more credit! A Late Pass gives you a time extension to complete a quiz so you'll see a new due date, but there is a 25% penalty (except for Q1) only on problems done correctly after the original due date. So you may earn at least 75% credit on problems done on Quizzes 2-13 after the original due date up until the end of the semester. Note: This means you may earn at least 75% on every quiz if you complete all problems correctly by the final deadline to do a quiz in late mode, which is the due date of the final exam. To allow you to get used to the system, there is no penalty for doing problems in Quiz 1 (Q1.1-1.4) using a late pass. You need to use a late pass for each extra 48 extension, and may use multiple late passes on each quiz as needed. Problems answered correctly before the due date always earn full credit--even if you clicked to use a late pass before the original due date. Once you earn points for a problem, you keep those points even if you try a similar problem for more practice and answer the similar problem wrong! Only problems in Q2-13 answered correctly after the original due date using a late pass have the 25% penalty. IMPORTANT: Once a quiz is opened in Review mode, you may not use a late pass or earn any more points on that quiz. BE CAREFUL not to open in Review Mode unless you are happy with your score as is!
When you are taking a quiz, usually you have two attempts to get it correct. If it isn't correct after two attempts, it will state that no attempts remain, but you should see a link you can click to Try another similar question. Click on it. If you don't get the similar problem correct, click Try a Similar Problem again. You can do that as many times as you'd like!
You can ALWAYS practice any problem on an assessment that is available and do similar problems as many times as you'd like before its due date (even if you already earned credit) or while using a late pass period, or in review mode. (If you do a similar problem and get it wrong after you already earned credit, you keep your points. So practice does not lower your grade!) The difference is that in review mode your answers/scores are not recorded. To practice a problem, click on the link that states this info: Try another similar question, reattempt last question below, or select another question.
When an assessment is in Review Mode (which means it is after the original due date), you will see this note:
This assessment is in review mode - no scores will be saved. If there is an option to use a Late Pass, you may click it to extend the due date and earn credit (there may be a percent penalty--see above) on problems until the late pass expires. If there is an option to use more late passes, use more as needed. If there is no option to use a late pass, that means the option to use a late pass has passed. You may open it in in review mode but no work you do will be saved or counted for credit. Although you do not earn credit in Review Mode, you may open up assessments in Review Mode to practice problems to review and prepare for a test or the final. Also, when you open an assignment in review mode, you will not see your answers or how much credit you earned. You can find that in your gradebook.
It's a good idea to review assessments throughout the semester (especially tests), even as you learn and work on new material. Review is key so you don't forget what you've learned. You may usually open any homework, quiz or test in review mode after the due date. (If a late pass is available and you plan to use it on an assessment, do NOT open in review mode.) When an assessment is in Review Mode, you will see this note: This assessment is in review mode - no scores will be saved. That means you may open it and practice doing any problems you want but will not receive credit, and your work will not be saved. Click Create new versions of all questions to try newer versions of questions. That's especially a good idea to study for tests or the final.
If you do a problem that has to be hand-graded (where you write info), you will see this note: This question contains parts that can not be auto-graded. Those parts will count as a score of 0 until they are graded by your instructor. You will see an x by the problem and a score of zero until the instructor has time to grade it by hand, which could be a week or more after the due date.
If you submit an answer or uploaded something, and see the above note, you should still be able to see your answer. If you want to see what you entered (before it's in review mode), go to the assignment, click on it, and then the problem number. You should be able to see your answer or what you uploaded, or you might have to click on Reattempt problem first. You can change what your wrote or uploaded, and resubmit, or simply look at what you already did.
To see your answers and credit earned once it is in review mode (which means you cannot use a late pass or open for more credit), go to your gradebook, and click on the score earned to open the quiz. You will see the answers you entered and your score on each problem. Click Show Answer to see the correct answer to any problem.
Read all of the info below to understand how to earn credit. You earn full credit on any online problem by answering correctly by the original due date. If you use a Late Pass, the credit you earn depends on how the teacher set up the penalty for work done using a late pass--see top of page.
This is how to earn credit if you are NOT in review mode. Every time you answer a problem correctly, you earn and keep credit for that problem in the gradebook. If you go on to another problem and then want to go back to a problem you already tried, you can click Try another similar question OR Reattempt this question. To see what you already entered, click Reattempt this question. If you already earned credit for it, there is no reason to reattempt it unless you want to practice similar problems. Clicking Reattempt will also allow you to see your answer. You can also click Try another similar question for more practice. If you get the similar problem incorrect, it does not affect your score if you already earned credit. If you haven't earned credit on it, then you can usually try the same problem again unless you already tried it twice. In that case, click on Try another similar question and keep working on it until you get it right, or review videos, notes, etc.
For most online homework or quiz problems, you get two attempts to answer it correctly. If you answer incorrectly after the allowed number of attempts, you will see the following: "Try another similar question, or select another question. This question, with your last answer and correct answer, is displayed below."
Click "Try another similar problem" in order to try and earn credit on a new, similar problem. If you answer the new similar problem correctly, you earn credit. So it is possible to keep working on a problem until you answer it correctly. THAT IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO START WORKING ON EACH ASSIGNMENT AT LEAST A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE DUE DATE--to have time to keep working on problems you missed until you get it correct. Keep in mind you'll need to redeem a late pass (more details and info below) to earn some credit on a problem if you need to work on it after the original posted due date. You earn full credit for each problem answered correctly on or before the original due. If you redeem a late pass, you earn credit if it is answered correctly after the original due date and no later than the number of hours specified at top of page from the due date.
You earn full credit for problems submitted correctly before the ORIGINAL due date (even if you used a late pass before the due date). IF you redeem a late pass and do not open the assignment in review mode, you earn credit for problems submitted correctly after the ORIGINAL due date until the period expires.

Below are details about what you see and what you can do if you open a problem in review mode.
When you open an assignment in Review Mode, you will NOT see your score or your answers. To see your own answers and your score, go to your gradebook. In Review Mode, you can practice problems, try new similar problems, create all new problems to try, etc. You can submit your answer (but not for credit--scores are not earned or saved), and you can view the correct answer. Review Mode is great for reviewing problems in prep for a test or the final exam.
