How to Submit Written HW Packet
You are required to enroll in a free course management system called MyOpenMath (MOM). All online work and grades are in MOM. I DO NOT USE BLACKBOARD.
This is why it is VITALLY IMPORTANT to be enrolled in MyOpenMath as soon as you possibly can: that is where I teach the class. That is where I make announcements, send emails, provide instructions, have dates and deadlines, online HW info, practice tests, Beginning Algebra Review, packet info, test dates and policies, forums and discussion boards with more info, etc. It's just like a class on campus. You have to come to class to get the info. The way you do that in my online class is to be enrolled in MyOpenMath, log on, and read all that is provided for you to be successful. I start teaching the class on the first day of the semester. If you are not enrolled in MyOpenMath, you are not attending class. So you are not getting all of the info provided, and may be missing emails. I often also copy/paste them into the announcement page, but you really do want to make sure you do not miss anything important I am providing enrolled students.
Enroll in MOM using Course ID above by noon, 1/23/17. Sending me emails is not evidence of participating in class. You must enroll in MyOpenMath, log in and do work in the online materials starting on the first day of class. This is similar to attending class on campus. Submit answers in online HW assignments by due date for each HW, or you may be dropped. More directions below.
STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT SOME ANSWERS TO EACH ONLINE HW BY THE DUE DATE, OR MAY BE DROPPED. Instructions to enroll in MOM are below.
MyOpenMath Course ID: 18567
1. If you have a MyOpenMath account, log in. If not, go to www.myopenmath.com and create an account. Enter the SAME LAST NAME listed for you on SURF, the SAME FIRST NAME listed for you on SURF. If you go by a different name, please put that in parentheses next to your official SURF first name. So if your first name in SURF is listed as Jennifer and you go by Jen or JR or Sky (or whatever), enter your first name this way: Jennifer (Jen) or Jennifer (JR) or Jennifer (Sky), etc.
2. Click Enroll in New Class and enter the Course ID above. You must also enter your enrollment key, which is the section you are enrolled in. It is a 4 digit number. Log in to SURF and find out what section you are enrolled in, and use that number.
Since this is an online class, students are responsible for reading and understanding all information in this syllabus.
NOTE: The State of California accreditation standard requires that 1 unit of Academic Credit represents a minimum of 48 total hours of student work. For a 4 unit class meeting 16 weeks, that represents 12 hours a week. Be prepared to devote that much time if you take one of my classes. More info can be found (see page 10) by clicking this link. Online courses can be convenient for those with hectic schedules. However, you must understand that this course is not self-paced. There will be assignments due each week. This class requires strong self-discipline, good time management skills and a pro-active attitude toward the class and assignments. Online courses can be more difficult and time-consuming. Map out at least 12 hours a week, preferably spending 2-3 hours daily, and treat those hours like a job where you must show up. I want all of my students to pass. Make a commitment right now to put forward your very best effort. For most students, the time commitment required to pass this class is approximately 12 hours EACH week, which includes watching/transcribing videos, reading, completing problems in the packets and online HW, practicing, reviewing, etc.
This class is HYBRID, not completely online. Students are required to make appointments to take proctored tests in person. More info is in Test Info in MOM. Click here for options if you will be out of the county during the window to take tests.
Professor: Julie Harland--Email: jharland@miracosta.edu
Feel free to call me Julie, Mrs. Harland, Ms. Harland, Ms. Julie, or Professor Harland.
Office Hours: MW 1-1:30 pm and 6:20-6:50 pm online (I will probably be in 3622 during this time); and by appointment. Contact me ahead of time if you want to meet me in my office. Each time you email or call, sign your email with your first and last name, and a phone number with times you may be reached.
I am committed to having regular contact with you via weekly emails and announcements. I monitor your attendance--see attendance policy below. Email me if you ever have any questions, or want to discuss something personal or related to math or about the class. IF YOU EMAIL me asking questions, I WILL USUALLY GET BACK TO YOU WITHIN 48 HOURS Mon-Fri, and usually much quicker than that. If I don't get back to you within 48 hours M-F, I didn't get the email. In that case, email me again. If I contact you asking a question, please respond within 48 hours--the sooner, the better. CHECK YOUR EMAIL REGULARLY AND CHECK ANNOUNCEMENTS/MESSAGES/FORUMS in MOM a few times a week to make sure you do not miss any important info! Make sure you are receiving my emails. I often post email announcements in announcements.
Course Description Intermediate Algebra: This algebra course covers radicals, exponents, concepts of relations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear and quadratic functions, and the solutions of equations from these topics.
Student Learning Outcome: For a given set of problems the student will demonstrate quantitative reasoning by developing a problem-solving strategy, performing appropriate analysis and computation, and critically assessing the meaning of the conclusion or outcome.
Calculator: You will need a basic or scientific calculator for this class. Calculators may be used on proctored tests. Most homework should be done without a calculator. Only use when necessary. I recommend TI-30-XS (for about $20) since it is what you may use in the Academic Proctoring Center on tests. On proctored tests, you may ONLY use a calculator provided by the APC. Use of cell phones as calculators is not allowed.
Attendance Policies: Attendance is monitored by your verified participation in class each week in the following ways. You may be dropped if you do not follow the requirements below. Contact me any time you are unable to fulfill these policies.
1. Log in to our MOM class often to read announcements and check for forum posts or messages. You must submit answers to HW problems due each week. Logging in without answering HW problems, using a late pass, opening a HW assignment but not submitting any answers, clicking other links or watching videos does NOT count toward attendance. You should spend a minimum of 4 hours a week in MOM unless you complete all HW ahead of the due date.
2) Show up and take all tests during your scheduled appointment time. Be on time with your valid photo I.D. If you do not take a proctored test by its deadline, you may be dropped unless I am notified within a day of the deadline.
TESTS: There are 3 proctored tests and a comprehensive Final Exam that you must take in the Academic Proctoring Center (APC) on campus. Choose computer exam. There may also be a paper/pencil part where you must show your work on the test. The dates you may take each test, as well as all info regarding appointments is in Test Info in MOM. Click here for options if you will be out of the county during the window to take tests. There are no make-ups even for emergencies. However, if you miss a test or do better on the final exam than your lowest test, the lowest test score will be replaced with your grade on the final exam. The final exam is required and may not be replaced by a test. Contact me within 24 hours of the deadline if you miss a test.
Schedule and Assignments: There will be four units. Open each unit about a week before it starts. The schedule, directions, links, notes, and online HW assignments (shows due dates) are in each unit folder. Open each online HW assignment at least a few days before its due date in case you have questions. There are 13 regular online HW assignments, and each is worth the same amount toward your online HW grade. There are also a few non-math online HW assignments worth very little toward your HW grade. If you transcribe videos and do the packet problems first, you should be prepared to do the online HW assignment. If you need more time to complete an online HW assignment, you may redeem a late pass .
Each HW Packet must be submitted for grading. They are not excepted late. See Schedule in each module for due dates. However, there is an option to use your final HW percent in place of your packet grade.
Studying: Completing your homework is not the same thing as studying. Most students need to review a concept or a procedure many times before it becomes familiar and sticks. Schedule at least 12 hours a week (2-3 hours a day) for working on this class. You may need more time. I encourage you to frequently go back and review older videos and HW problems to make sure you still remember the concepts and can work through the problems correctly.
Grading: A point earned in one category is not worth the same as a point earned in another category. 1600 points total. No extra credit.
*Unit HW Packets: 200 (2 times overall percent earned on Unit HW packets; see alternate option below)
Online HW: 100 (Overall percent earned on online HW--approximately the average you earn on the 13 math online HW assignments)
Tests: 900 (3 tests, each worth 300 points--3 times percent earned on each test.)
Final Exam: 400 (4 times percent earned on final exam)
Grades are calculated using the following scale with the extra stipulation that you must also earn at least 50% on the final exam to pass the class with a C or better. You must pass most tests (especially the final exam) to pass the class. HW helps, but your grade is based mainly on your ability to recall and be able to work problems correctly in a testing situation.
A: 1440 B: 1280 C: 1120 D: 960
*Option to replace Packet Grade with Online HW Grade
Watching the videos, and doing all the problems in the packet is important to do to learn and practice the material. However, I understand turning in and picking up packets is not always convenient. I am offering the following option. This is how I will be grading at the end of the semester.
If the final percent on your online HW is higher than the final percent earned on the four Unit HW Packets, I will replace the final percent you earn on the Unit HW packets with the final percent you earn on the online HW. This means you are not required to turn in the written Unit HW packets if you would like all of your HW grade to based solely on your online HW. The advantage of turning in the packets is that if you earn a higher percent on them than on the online HW, it could raise your grade a little. However, with this option, earning a lower percent on the Unit HW Packets than the online HW cannot lower your grade as I will automatically replace your Unit HW packet percent with your online HW percent in that case. It's up to you whether you want to keep turning in the packets. You do not need to notify me that you want this option or not as I will automatically use the option that gives you the best grade.
