3/1/17 Reminders

Attendance Reminder to everyone: If it's been more than a week since you logged in and completed any online HW problems (unless you are ahead), then you need to do that ASAP, or may be dropped. Attendance is required to continue in the class.

Please remember to pick up your graded Unit 1 packet by stopping by the building where you dropped off. Any packets not picked up by 3/10/17 will be recycled.

If you haven't scheduled an appt to take Test 2, do so immediately and then complete the HW assignment in MyOpenMath called HW T2 Appt. where you state your appt. place, date, and time. I suggest you schedule your appointments for Test 3 and the final exam now as well.

Below are upcoming due dates.

3/3: DUE DATE: HW 5

3/3: Transcribe videos and complete 2.6-2.7 in packet by 3/8. Then open HW 6--due 3/10.

3/8: DUE DATE: HW T2 Appt

3/10: DUE DATE: HW 6

3/10: Transcribe videos and complete 2.8-2.9 in packet by 3/15. Then open HW 7--due 3/17.

3/17: DUE DATE: HW 7

3/18-3/30:Take Test 2 during appt time. Submit your completed, bound Unit 2 packet to 3600 Building at Oceanside or Administration Building at San Elijo. Make sure your name and my name is on packet. Ideally, submit it when you come to campus to take your proctored test. If you forget, I will accept it until noon on 3/31. Don't wait until the last minute!

Any of the following ways may be used to schedule an appt directly with the APC:

Choose Computer Test when making an appointment. A test may be on a computer and/or on paper where you show your work.

Tests are timed: 1.5 hours is available to take Tests 1, 2 and 3. 2 hours is available to take the Final Exam. Problems are usually similar to problems on the assigned videos, in the Unit Packets, or in the online HW. The final exam may cover anything from the entire semester but will have an emphasis on Unit 4.

3/5/17 Info & Attendance/Drop Notice

I hope you are all doing well and having fun learning all about radicals. Remember to check the forum posts when you log in. There have been some great questions lately. If you have questions, please utilize the forums.

Most of you are following the attendance policy and doing your work on time, so keep up the good work! If you have not completed any of HW 5, log in, use a late pass voucher and complete problems using a late pass no later than Monday, 3/6/17. Anyone not doing this may be dropped on Tuesday, 3/7, for not following this part of the Attendance Policy in the syllabus: You must submit answers to HW problems due each week. Logging in without answering HW problems, using a late pass, opening a HW assignment but not submitting any answers, clicking other links or watching videos does NOT count toward attendance. You should spend a minimum of 4 hours a week in MOM unless you complete all HW ahead of the due date.

3/5/17 Option to replace Packet Grade with Online HW Grade

Watching the videos, and doing all the problems in the packet is important to do to learn and practice the material. However, I understand turning in and picking up packets is not always convenient. I am offering the following option. This is how I will be grading at the end of the semester.

If the final percent on your online HW is higher than the final percent earned on the four Unit HW Packets, I will replace the final percent you earn on the Unit HW packets with the final percent you earn on the online HW. This means you are not required to turn in the written Unit HW packets if you would like all of your HW grade to be based solely on your online HW. The advantage of turning in the packets is that if you earn a higher percent on them than on the online HW, it could raise your grade a little. However, with this option, earning a lower percent on the Unit HW Packets than the online HW cannot lower your grade as I will automatically replace your Unit HW packet percent with your online HW percent in that case. It's up to you whether you want to keep turning in the packets. You do not need to notify me that you want this option or not as I will automatically use the option that gives you the best grade.

3/12/17 Unit 2 ends this week, and then it is Spring Break. You may take Test 2 this Saturday, 3/18, or after Spring Break Monday-Thursday, 3/27-3/30.

HW 7 is due this Friday, 3/17. If you have questions, ask before Friday as I will be out of town during Spring Break. There is a folder called Reviews, Practice Tests & Info which has Review Problems and Practice Tests for Test 2. These have about 60 questions, so would take you longer to complete than the real test, which only has about 31 problems. I suggest you to the Review and/or a Practice Test before taking the real test.

3/16/17

I extended the due date for HW 7 to Sunday, 3/26/17, but that is a final deadline. No late passes can be used. This gives everyone time to catch up during Spring Break, if needed. I highly encourage you to finish it earlier than that to give yourself time to study everything in Unit 2. Doing the Review and Practice Tests should help. Remember: You can open any assignment in Review mode and practice problems as much as you'd like. One suggestion is to write each problem from the review on an index card, and write the full solution on the back. Mix them up, and practice doing problems out of order until you feel confident. You may take Test 2 this Saturday, 3/18, or Monday-Thursday, 3/27-3/30. I hope you have a great Spring Break.

I hope you all had a great spring break. The deadline to take Test 2 is this Thursday. If you haven't yet taken it, make sure you show up at your scheduled appointment on time. Unit 3 starts on Friday, but you are welcome to begin earlier. There are 3 regular online HW assignments in Unit 3, but not all of them are available yet, as I'm updating some problems. Open Unit 3 on or before this Friday, and follow the schedule.

It's time to schedule an appointment to take Test 3. Due date for HW T3 Appt is 4/5. Take care of this now. There were a lot of very high scores on Test 2. Awesome!

To review each graded test, log in to your gradebook and click on your score. I'll let you know when packets are graded and ready to be picked up, which should be by end of next week. Even though you do not have to turn packets in (since I let you use your online HW score for that part of your grade if that works better for you), you still need to watch the videos and do the problems in the packet to learn/practice the material to have a better chance of doing well on the online HW and tests. The online HW only has a few practice problems--you need to do a lot more than that to master the material. If online HW is all you do, do similar problems to get more practice.

Below is the schedule starting today. Everyone should be transcribing the videos for 3.1-3.3, and start working on the packet. I added a HW 8 part 2 where you solve problems using the quadratic formula since there were not enough problems in HW 8. It is an optional, but highly recommended assignment, and does not count toward your grade. If you already finished HW 8, open up and do HW 8 part 2.
