Reading aloud to children – is it still the key to literacy in the 21st century?
Reading aloud has been the key to early literacy for so many children. It is the way to make a child think that there is something magical in books and to make children want to read them for themselves so that they can dip into this magical world whenever they like. However in this world of ebooks and the internet, does reading aloud become increasingly difficult in schools? This is a discussion about literacy, about the importance of reading aloud both to very young and to older children. There will be discussion of books that provide delight when read aloud and also of books that children will love to read for themselves. The emphasis will be on books from a wide range of countries with a range of themes from early years to grade 8.
Kate Shepherd worked for ten years in a specialist children’s bookshop in Perth in Western Australia before setting up her own bookselling business Austral Ed 16 years ago. Austral Ed now has its office in Adelaide in South Australia and specialises in supplying books to International Schools round the world and also to schools in Australia. Kate compiles many lists of books that she recommends on a wide range of topics such as Children’s Books about Asia, about Africa, Early Childhood and also books for the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate. These lists are much appreciated by librarians and teachers.
