Salak

Salak mountain dominates the city of Bogor, making it the most accessible summit from Jakarta. The shortest access is from the village of Cigombong, a big bend on the road from Bogor to Sukabumi. At Cigombong, it's easy to take an Ojek to bring you up 1.5km towards the Salak 1 summit. Ascension can take 4 to 5h, there is water available at the start of the trail but not after, so it's good to carry water storage.

Salak is composed of 2 summits, Salak 1 and Salak 2. For the moment, only Salak 1 is officially open, its itinerary is described below.

It's possible and even recommended to camp on Salak 1 top, as there are 2 shelters, beware, they are usually full on Saturday evening. The Salak 2 summit can be easily seen from Salak 1 as it is so close [1km], and at the same altitude [2,200m ].

On the next morning, a trail in the general direction South South West will bring you to Salak crater after a 4h descent, dont miss the right turn half way, next to a beautiful meadow which makes an attractive camping ground. The Salak crater is exhaling toxic fumes, so camping is forbidden in the immediate surroundings.

From Salak crater, there are 2 options: the South route will bring you back to the Bogor Sukabumi road, the North route will bring you to the Bogor Jasinga road. both are quite long, taking between 3-5 h, but at least there will be water on the way.

When you follow this itinerary and exit through the North Gate, there is no fee to pay. If you do it the other way round, there is a fee which, I remember, is around 15k Rp.

Bonne route
