Lawu

This rewarding trek brings you to the top of Lawu at 3265m. Out of the rainy season, the savana at the summit allows magnificient views on Solo, and a serie of temples with an Hindu origin.

The path up from Cemoro Sewu at 1900m (1 thousand pines) is paved, and clearly marked. It is thus possible to do it in 1 day (go and return). Up:5h, Down: 4h. Every hour, there is a POS with a shelter, only the last one, POS 5, near the top at 3100m, has water all year round.

The trail down to Cemoro Kandang (pine cage), also at 1900m is less well marked and is a lot longer due to a serie of wide zigzags, with some water along it. The high pass (2000m) from Tawangmangu to the lake Sarangan is magnificent seen from there. On the way down, around 2200m, there is a crater with sulphur fumes, and the forest around it is dead or burned.

Access: Solo airport is well serviced from Jakarta. Every 30min, a bus leaves to Tawangmangu from the Solo bus terminal (1h30 - 10k Rp), from there, take an Angkot (30min - prices vary from 5 to 15k Rp).
