In the first month of the Veterinary Medicine study I had an internship for a week to test handling of animals. I drew a pig farm in IJsselstein (Utrecht). It was during the swine fever measures. I had to wear different working clothes and caps on my boots in every stable.
It was also the transitional time when ear and tail docking in piglets was just allowed. I was allowed to do this with the newborn piglets. What a noise piglets can make. Fortunately, this procedure without anesthesia has been abolished.
That week I took the bus to and from the farm. From the busstop I had to walk about 30 minutes to the farm and the frequence of the bus was very low. With the tram I had to walk even more.
On the way to there, there were always people sitting next to me, but on the way back I had plenty of space. This was of course due to the delicious pigsty perfume that sticks to me. A quick wash or short shower won't help. I had to shower for more then 10 minutes to get rid of the pig perfume at home and wash my hair too all week. It was more than worth it to learn how a pig farm works and the role I as a future vet would play at a pig farm.
