Denmark is a small country compared to its closest neighbours. Sweden are ten times and Germany eight times larger than Denmark. Only land border is the German border, which is 69 kms long. (40 miles)
Denmark has a coastline that is extraordinary given the size of the country. Denmark has a coastline of more than 7,500 km (4.500 miles), corresponding to almost 1.5 metres (5 feet) of coast per inhabitant.
In Skagen alone, we have 50 km (30 miles) of coastline - that's 6 meter (20 feet) per person, so we have enough to share with guests. And they are all very nice beaches.
Another characteristic of Denmark’s geography is the many islands. More than 400 named islands. The largest islands are Zealand and the second largest is where we are right now - Vendsyssel
We have no mountains - the highest point is only 170 meters (600 feet). Average temperature in summer is 17 degrees Celsius (62 Fahrenheit)
Population
The population in Denmark is 5,7 million, and almost one in four Danes has now passed the age of 60 years
The Capital is Copenhagen with 1.3 million inhabitants (2017)

Højsæsonen for hygge
Economics
The currency is still the kroner despite our membership of the European Union, but shops will accept almost any currency like Euros and American dollars and any major creditcards.
Average income taxes is 34% in a progressive system up to 60%. Total average taxes is 45-50% (including taxes real estate, interests and goods)
Church taxes just below 1% - not mandatory - only members of national church society.
Spend 38% of GDP on social security and education, see below
Others
We drive on the right side of the road - The right side IS the rights side.
The national dish is slices of roasted pork belly fat served with boiled potatoes and parsley sauce and beetroots.
National sport is football - soccer, but we're better at handball.
Heating: 64% has district heating (fjernvarme), which is produced by 55% based on green sustainable energy.
The Danish meaning of hygge
Hygge is as Danish as pork roast and it goes far in illuminating the Danish soul. In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with friends and family (or alone). The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. There's nothing more hygge than sitting round a table, discussing the big and small things in life. Or watching the telly in your boxershorts and t-shirts eating chocolate.
Perhaps hygge explains why the Danes are the happiest people in the world?
The high season of hygge
The high season of hygge is Christmas. Danish winters are long and dark, and so the Danes fight the darkness with their best weapon: hygge, and the millions of candles that go with it. Ever been to Tivoli Gardens or walked the streets of Copenhagen during the festive season? Then you know what Danes can do with lighting and mulled wine (known as gløgg)! If you haven’t, you should experience it!
Summer hygge
If you plan on visiting Denmark during the summer months, you can still experience hygge. Picnics in the park, barbeques with friends, outdoor concerts, street festivals and bike rides can all be very hygge, especially when done the Danish way.
Crime
In 2015 only 1,1% of the population e.g. approx. 65.000 people was a victim of personal crime. But 44.000 of these were offences against property and 18.000 crimes of violence (probably most barfights) leaving only very few crimes of sexual offences, rape and homicide.
Alcohol- and drug problem are present, but often confined to special areas in larger cities.
Homicide:
DK 57 per year = 0.001%
US 16.110 per year = 0.005%
On average 2 Danes commit suicide per day (3 of 4 is men)
Danish welfare benefits (and taxes) through a lifetime
From birth till death almost every kind of health care and hospital treatment is free. You might have to wait a while though – private treatment costs.
Dental treatment is only free as long as you’re under 25 years of age.
Denmark spent 38% of our GDP (Gross Domestic Product) on social security and education
UK – 26% and US 19%, but the price we pay in Denmark is 45-50% total in taxes.
Agricultura - what is grown in the fields?
Primarily in Denmark we grow:
WHEAT used for animal feed, export and for bread
BARLEY, used for feed - not whisky
MAIZE ELLER CORN, used for feed
RAPESEED, used for oil production and the remains for feed.
The feed is primarily for PORK PRODUCTION
Of the pork production 90 % are for export - the biggest buyers are Germany, Great Britain, Poland and China.

The Danes is very content with themselves, they wont make eyecontact or smalltalk, there is no "please" or "excuse" me. They may be protecting their privacy and not sharing and talking - thus not asking "How are you?" because the dont want to talk about themselves. This might cause a pretty poor service, which lead us to the next ...

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Danish pastry or just Danish is a multilayered, laminated sweet pastry in the viennoiserie tradition. The concept was brought to Denmark by Austrian bakers and has since developed into a Danish specialty. Like other viennoiserie pastries, such as croissants, Danish pastry is a variant of puff pastry made of laminated yeast-leavened doughs, creating a layered texture.
Danish pastries were exported by immigrants to the United States, and are today popular around the world.
Composition
A yeast dough is rolled out thinly, covered with thin slices of butter between the layers of dough, and then the dough is folded and rolled several times, creating 27 layers.
Brevfoldning (3 lag)Brevfoldning giver 3 lag smør
3 brevfoldninger: 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 lag smør
If necessary, the dough is chilled between foldings to ease handling. The process of rolling, buttering, folding and chilling is repeated multiple times to create a multilayered dough that becomes airy and crispy on the outside, but also rich and buttery.
Terminology
In Danish, Norwegian and Swedish, the term for Danish pastry is wienerbrød/wienerbröd, "Viennese bread".
History
The origin of the Danish pastry is often ascribed to a strike amongst bakery workers in Denmark in 1850. The strike forced bakery owners to hire workers from abroad, among them several Austrian bakers, who brought along new baking traditions and pastry recipes.
The Austrian pastry of Plundergebäck soon became popular in Denmark and after the labour disputes ended, Danish bakers adopted the Austrian recipes, adjusting them to their own liking and traditions by increasing the amount of egg and fat for example. This development resulted in what is now known as the Danish pastry.
One of the baking techniques and traditions that the Austrian bakers brought with them was the Viennese lamination technique. Due to such novelties the Danes called the pastry technique "wienerbrød" and, as mentioned above, that name is still in use in Northern Europe today.
Denmark
Danish pastries as consumed in Denmark have different shapes and names. Some are topped with chocolate, pearl sugar, glacé icing and/or slivered nuts and they may be stuffed with a variety of ingredients such as jam or preserves (usually apple or prune), remonce, marzipan and/or custard. Shapes are numerous, including circles with filling in the middle (known in Denmark as "Spandauers"), figure-eights, spirals (known as snails), and the pretzel-like kringles.
In Sweden, Danish pastry is typically made in the Spandauer-style, often with vanilla custard.
United States
Danish pastry was brought to the United States by Danish immigrants. Lauritz C. Klitteng of Læsø popularized "Danish pastry" in the US around 1915–1920. According to Klitteng, he made Danish pastry for the wedding of President Woodrow Wilson in December 1915. Klitteng toured the world to promote his product and was featured in such 1920s periodicals as the National Baker, the Bakers' Helper, and the Bakers' Weekly. Klitteng briefly had his own Danish Culinary Studio at 146 Fifth Avenue in New York City.
Herman Gertner owned a chain of New York City restaurants and had brought the danish immigrant Lauritz Klitteng to New York to sell Danish pastry.
Gertner's obituary appeared in the January 23, 1962 New York Times:
"At one point during his career Mr. Gertner befriended a Danish baker who convinced him that Danish pastry might be well received in New York. Mr. Gertner began serving the pastry in his restaurant and it immediately was a success."
Cartoon controversy
During the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy in 2006, several religious Iranian groups advocated changing the name of the highly popular Danish (Shriniye Danmarki), given its name association with the source country of the offending cartoons.
The Iranian confectioners' union designated "Roses of the Prophet Muhammad" as the new name for danishes made in the country as of 15 February 2006, although compliance with the proposed name in bakeries was mixed and short-lived.

The 3 countries in the Nordic region are Denmark, Norway, and Sweden
The Danes being the farmers,
Swedes are the industrialists, and
The Norwegians are Ship haulers and fishing men
Denmark is the only country in the Nordic/Baltic region with a net export of agricultural products. We produce 3 times the amount of food we need to feed our own population. We are famous for our Butter, Cheese and Pork (bacon) which are exported to numerous countries all over the world.
A high percentage of arable land and a moderate climate has been conducive to agriculture in Denmark.
Our stable crops have mainly been
Cereals
wheat,
barley (feed for animals/Pigs, malt for beer and whisky*)
* Carlsberg malts are used by scotch whisky producers.
oats
rye and
potatoes,
sugar beets,
grassland,
Canola (rape seed oil) and
green maize
Originally, we grew only Barley, Rye and Oats, not very suited for human food.
Hence the animal sector grew, and we were able to offer high quality butter and pork meat mainly to the British market, where the early industrialization increased demands for food.
The need for efficient transport, cooling capacity etc. build the basis for numerous inventions that made the fundament for our main industries in Denmark eg.:
"Maersk" who invented the ship cargo of Pork meat to Britain
"Danfoss" who invented the refrigeration systems for cooling the meat and butter
"Novo Nordic" who needed the pancreas from the slaughtered pigs for their production of Insulin
Today we produce about 20 mio. pigs a year, exporting to a dozen of countries all over the world. (Danish Crown -“Tulip”)
Our dairy industry is the main player in several countries many of you may know "ARLA". Danish Crown and Arla are cooperatives owned by the farmers.
The agricultural sector's extremely advanced technology and infrastructure has made this sector very productive in recent years.
The Marshall aid after World War 2 was invested into mechanization in agriculture as well as the establishment of a highly efficient consulting advisor service in the agricultural sector
Nearly all farmers are members of local organizations with advisors in all sectors (machinery, Arable cropping, fertilization, economy, Animal husbandry etc.), and research.
We still grow mainly cereals but now wheat varieties suitable for our climate have been developed and are the main cereal crop.
Maize varieties growable in this Nordic region have outmaneuvered fodder beets for cows and cattle
Potatoes are grown not only for human consumption, but we produce world’s best potato starch suitable for eg. the pharmaceutical industry and food industry.
We are the world’s main producer of grass for seed, so when you buy new seed for your lawn it is properly Danish seeds.
Although agriculture's role in the Danish economy has steadily decreased as industrialization and economic development has progressed, it is still essential as a source of foreign currency, a direct and indirect source of jobs, and as a supply of everyday food.
The increasing mechanization of agriculture, combined with changes in farm management and organization, plus the draw of industrial employment into the cities, has meant fewer people are required to farm ever-increasing quantities of land.
Farm sizes have increased, and the number of individual farms has dropped dramatically since the 1950s.
From the 1970s into the 1990s, 2,600 individual holdings disappeared every year, absorbed into larger farms.
In the first half of the 20th century Denmark had around 200,000 individual farms, averaging 16 hectares in size.
Today, there are less than 10.000 farmers full time growing about 200 hectares of land.
Family-run farms are still dominant in Denmark, where more than 90 percent of farms are family-owned and run.
Specialization in animal production has led to fewer types, but larger numbers of livestock.
Denmark is Europe's primary supplier of Christmas trees.
Denmark is the leading producer of organic foods in Europe and the world.
