DRESS FOR THE WEATHER! Bring an extra layer if it is cold - you may not use it, but you'll be thankful you have it if you need it.
One more time, because it's so important - bring extra clothes and dress for the weather! If you are working at an aid station and standing in the fresh air, it can get quite chilly.
Here is a list of other ideas and things to bring:
Layered clothing, including hats, gloves, and a raincoat if it might rain. (Sometimes the rain comes off the lake sideways and gets under the tents) It can be cold, hot, windy, raining, foggy, snowing and all the other weather, even during the same shift! Bike folks - you probably know what you need to wear, but having extra clothing in a backpack won't hurt.
A flashlight or headlamp. Even if you don't need it at the aid station, it's handy while walking to and from your car in the dark. Assuming your volunteer shift is at night, dusk, twilight, pre-dawn or so on.
FOOD questions and answers!!!!
While volunteering you are welcome and encouraged to enjoy the yummy delicacies available at the aid station!
Please don't feel guilty about eating the food! We generally have plenty left over, and would much rather have to make a grocery run for a few things than have our volunteers go hungry! Eat! Eat! (Do we sound like an Italian grandmother yet???)
If you have a special diet you may want to bring food that you're comfortable having while on your shift. We do our best to provide for a variety of diets, but if you are very sensitive to allergens, you may want to have some supplies that you know are safe for you.
The Power Lines Aid Station has a limited menu of cookies, crackers, snacks, water, Tailwind, and broth at night. If you are there during a meal time, you may want to bring a sandwich or something more substantial. There is a camp stove and hot water if you want to warm something up or make noodles/etc.
WATER and DRINKS!!!!
All aid stations will have cold/hot water, coffee, tea and Tailwind, which is an electrolyte drink. Please help yourself!
Milford and Brookline aid stations will also have soda.
There will be cups, but maybe consider a water bottle of some sort. Don't feel guilty about drinking things at the aid stations! Again, we'd much rather have to hit the market than have our volunteers hungry or thirsty.
Some volunteers find that a folding or portable chair is nice to have.
A big smile and a great, positive attitude! This is KEY and means THE WORLD to all the runners!
