THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!
We have gotten feedback that sometimes the bike volunteers don't feel like they are part of the event, and I (Rob, the RD) have heard you and want to correct that. Personally, I love being on bike patrol and I feel like the bikes add a TON to the race! The runners love seeing the bike volunteers, love knowing that if they were having problems that you're there to help or encourage them, and have also found a few runners in situations where they really needed help and bikes where there, which all of us at Ghost Train are truly thankful for.
Seriously, thank you. I hope we will make all volunteers, including the bike patrol volunteers, feel great about being part of Ghost Train. You are an important part, and we absolutely appreciate you and your time.
If you've been part of the bike patrol before and have suggestions, drop me an email at ghosttrainrace@gmail.com - I'd love to hear from you!
Volunteer Check In: Camp Tevya aid station where you will pick up your bike patrol aid pack. Carolina is the aid station Captain. More info about parking is on the parking page.
Biking the trail is a great way to be out and spending time with the runners! You'll get to bike the rail trail as much as you like during your shift, and offer motivation, treats, and emergency help as needed. Emergency help isn't always about injuries. (We really hope we don't have any serious injuries!) It can also mean giving some basic materials from a first aid kit, or a small flashlight or batteries to someone whose headlamp is dead. These items will be provided to each bike patrol volunteer as part of your bike patrol kit. Basically, you will be a one person portable mini aid station.
Here are some points to know about Bike Patrol:
You are welcome to go back and forth along the trail as much as you like for the duration of your shift!
Please bring a bike that is suitable for the trail. Bikes are not provided by the race.
Much of the trail is packed dirt, the kind of surface you'd expect for a rail trail. Some sections are single track with some roots and a few rocks. There is one hill, which we ask you to walk your bike up and down the other side. We know you can bike it, but we want to do the safest thing for our patrol and our runners! You also don't have to go up the hill if you're not comfortable with the terrain.
WATER, TAILWIND and FOOD - all aid stations will have water, Tailwind, hot water, and during the night will have hot broth, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The main aid stations in Brookline and Milford have more substantial food in addition to a variety of snacks, while the Power Lines aid station in the middle will mainly have snacks.
Please eat, drink, and refill your bottles as much as you like at the aid stations while you are on your shift! There seems to have been confusion about this in the past. We want you to have the calories and fluids you need.
Each bike patrol volunteer will pick up a kit from the aid station at Camp Tevya when checking in. This kit is about the size of a gallon zip lock bag and will have very basic first aid materials, extra batteries, a sign for your handlebars, and other assorted items.
Please use caution and make sure runners have the right of way.
A map of the Ghost Train Trail is below if you'd like to be familiar with some of the landmarks.
Please note - we are not insured nor are most volunteers trained to offer medical assistance. We have a policy for the race (as do most races) that we have two levels of aid available... 1) We can offer you some basic supplies for a runner to treat themselves, or 2) We can call 911 for you. If you are not trained and insured in the State of New Hampshire to offer medical assistance, please go with calling 911 if needed. (Please also call the race emergency number so the RD and race team knows about the medical situation, or ask any passing runner with a phone to call so you can stay on with 911) Thank you!
