Between 1825 and 1863, the Northern Territory was part of New South Wales. From 1863 to 1911, the Northern Territory was part of South Australia. Therefore, records for those periods may be found under the respective jurisdictions.

Darwin was initially named Palmerston (in 1869), until it was changed in 1911. Although the Port of Darwin has been named as such since 1869.

Did you know..... that Darwin has had a Greek community since the late 19th century? The first arrivals were from the island of Kastellorizon, with others arriving later from various parts of Greece adn Macedonia. The annual Glenti Festival celebates the Greek community in Darwin.
