Wednesday, 4-4 Publish and pass papers.

Friday, 4-6

Contest critiques are in. Pass them out and take a few minutes to look at them. Then return them to the manila envelope.

Plan April and May issues. (Taygan in charge of budgeting space. Gwynn in charge of generating ideas for stories. Both will work together. Everyone should participate.) Begin by discussing the following: With no seniors on staff, do you desire to do a senior issue. Will you be able to get senior participation? (Whatever you decide, keep in mind that Seth and Hope will need time to work on their headlines for state contest. Their entries are due Wednesday, April 25 by 11 p.m.)

1. Choose publications dates. I'd suggest Thursday, April 26. (There's an in-service Friday, the 27th.) and Friday, May 11. (The senior commencement is on Sunday, May 13.)

2. Choose story deadline dates.

3. Generate story ideas. (See the bottom of the Monthly Story Assts. page for a few ideas.)

4. Assign stories. Note the assignments on the Monthly Story Assts. page. Be sure to assign sports stories, too.

5. Assign tasks, including page layout assignments, for both issues.

6. Create templates for both issues.

7. Generate feature ideas for both issues. If you decide to do a senior issue, the May features should be about seniors.

8. Get started on layout for the May issue. If you decide to prepare a senior issue, you can find photos and determine what questions you'll ask the seniors and how you'll get the answers. (I'd suggest using paper and asking Mrs. Rohrer and me to use a few minutes of English class time to collect answers.)

J1 - Work on personal publications.

Taygan, work with Gwynn on creating a new template from scratch or changing the defaults on our current templates so text wrap is NOT the default. Here's a video about starting from scratch. Here's an explanation of how to change preferences and defaults. This task will probably be frustrating.

Here are the things we need to change:

1. When we enter text and graphics, we don't want to default to having a text wrap around either.

2. When we enter text on an InDesign page, we don't want it to be italicized and flush right.

3. There may be other details to fix. You may make a list and fix them. For example, maybe you want to work in inches rather than picas. If so, put that on the list of default changes you'd like to make.

Olivia, explore other schools' Twitter accounts and see what they are posting. Start with Salina Central and Ellsworth. Prepare a report for me and your class.

Gwynn, help Taygan fix our defaults in InDesign or work on the next fun page.

b. 78 percent believe in life after death. (See this story online.)

    2. Using the Salina Journal to get ideas, write down 5 ideas per person that might transfer to The Trojournal. (Individual work)

    3. Then work together on the Futures Book. Fill in enough ideas for October that there are at least two story ideas for each person on staff (at least 18 total USEABLE ideas).

    4. J1 students, Hope and Seth: Work on your personal publications.

    5. J2 student, Olivia Pennington: Use InDesign CC 2017 to create the October “blank” pages for The Trojournal. We’ll plan to distribute the next issue on Oct. 25. Just use the September Trojournal pages as your template and use the SAVE AS command to create October “blank” pages. DO NOT USE THE SAVE COMMAND; that would save over the top of the September pages, and we may still need those. Remember, though: You will keep the flag stuff on page 1, the masthead material and the Around the Halls stuff on p. 2, and the sports box on the right of page 13. Change all folio lines to Oct. 25 (including page 1) and change the issue number to “2.”. You can’t mess things up if you’ll use the SAVE AS command, so proceed with confidence.

    6. If any of you finish or, for some unforeseen reason, cannot proceed, work independently on the InDesign and PhotoShop tutorials listed in the left sidebar (also reproduced below):

Layout Stuff

InDesign Basics

Tutorials-InDesign

More ID Tutorials

Photoshop tutorial

Wednesday, 9-27 Look over credit sheet and discuss. Assign stories. Talk about KSPA Fall Conference.

See this article about Tinker vs. Des Moines and this interview with Mary Beth Tinker.

Use Tinker, who talks about the civil rights movement as the impetus for her black arm band protest, as a segue to the Salina Central Pylon racism controversy. See Salina Journal stories (front page Monday, Sept. 25 and Sept. 26) on the Salina.com website, this KWCH segment and the Pylon's racism spread (pp. 16 and 17). Then, using 200-300 words per question, answer the four questions listed here and submit your answers on Classroom. Due by end on class. Due for Olivia by Friday beginning of class.

HW: Look at the futures book (October segment), add ideas, and put your name beside two ideas you'd like to follow up on (write stories about).

Friday, 9-29 Finalize story selections for October issue. Write questions for story 1 interview.
