FAQ

Q: What time does the meet start?

A: Start times vary. Most start at 4:00. Our home meet starts at 3:50. See the main JH scholars' page for start times.

Q: What time will you return home?

A: Return times vary depending on whether our teams make it into finals. Students will phone home as soon after the meet as we are able to predict a time we'll be back at the school.

Q: How long does a meet last?

A. Most last approximately two hours. We usually eat together before returning home. If a meet ends at 6 and we eat for one hour, we'd start our journey home at approximately 7 p.m.

Q: How will students be transported?

A: Generally, we will transport students in school vehicles. I drive one and a volunteer parent drives another. Parents, please feel free to call me to volunteer to drive if your son or daughter is assigned to go to a meet. (See the meet assignments link on the main JH scholars' bowl page.) We need drivers, and you'd probably enjoy watching the meet. We do need the following items if you drive: a completed student transportation disclosure (See attachment below.), a copy of your driver's license, and a copy of the paper you keep in your glove box that proves that you are an insured driver. Those items can be delivered to me or to Stephanie Hettenbach in the District Office.

Q: What should students wear?

A: School clothing is appropriate for scholars' meets.

Q: Will students have homework to do when they get home from a meet?

A. I hope not, but it depends on the nature of the homework. I request that students do homework on the way to meets. However, there are some assignments that can't be done in a vehicle. When homework is finished, we usually read quiz questions the rest of the way to the meet.

Q: Is there an admission charge for parents to get in to a scholars' competition?

A: No. Parents are encouraged to come and support their young scholars, and admission is free.

Q: Could we buy matching scholars' bowl shirts?

A: Probably not. I resist asking parents to spend money for another shirt -- no matter how cool it might be.

Q: How much money should I bring to a scholars' meet?

A: Bring $5 - $10 for food.

Q: If I'm not assigned to play at the home meet, is there anything I can do to help that day?

A: YES! I'll need every non-player to help as a timer or scorekeeper or runner or something. If you are not assigned to play, you will be assigned to help. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Q: How can parents help with the scholars' bowl program?

A: We are almost always in need of drivers. We also need parents to help with food preparation and serving at our home meet. The more parent volunteers we have for the home meet, the better opportunity all parents will have to watch part of the home competition.
