It will last about 13 minutes and will provide you background information about two approaches to literature - the archetypal approach and the psychological approach.
3. Then consider the archetypal approach to the story "The Demon Lover." Note: As the recording indicates, an archetype is a pattern. Many stories follow patterns that have been used in previous stories. I'll explain more about this during our Google Meet session on Monday/Tuesday.To prepare for that meeting, read/listen to the following items - the James Harris legend and the House Carpenter ballad). Write down at least three similarities between "The Demon Lover" short story and these two items. Examples:
*p. 2, line 2 of the letter: "In view of the fact that nothing has changed, I shall rely upon you to keep your promise." (This indicates that Kathleen has promised her soul to the writer of the letter, the demon.)
*p. 3, paragraph 5, Kathleen's lover said, “I shall be with you, sooner or later…” (This indicates that a demon wrote the letter and is stalking Kathleen.)
* (You might also note that the elements of the setting are eerie and then jot down a few specifics about the setting.
