We have studied the kinetics of a certain class of artificial spin ices. The main result is the the system did not go into the ground state. Some defects, whose dynamics is controlled by

dimers moving on the lattice, were present and were tracked. Monte Carlo simulations also showed similar results, with defects present in the ground state after a similar annealing protocol.

It seems like this is the first experimental evidence of topological order in a material. I'm very happy I've got a chance of being part of this work.
