REAR LIGHT ; BULB HOLDERS ; FITTING ALTERNATIVE TRIUMPH TR6 BULB HOLDERS
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The rear light units on the later Rialto and the Mk2 / Mk3 Robin are known to give trouble
with faulty connections due to the strip metal design and the style of the bulb holders .

ORIGINAL PUSH IN AND TWIST BULB HOLDER

I purchased 6 single contact Triumph TR6 bulb holders { for Flasher / Fog / Reverse applications } Part No.: 518042 fromRimmerbros.co.uk
There was a wiring spade at each end .
One is for attaching an earth wire to and the other is for the live feed .
However , I have since been informed that some of the bulb holders only have the spade connection for the live feed and no spade terminal for an earth .
and I purchased 2 double contact Stop / Tail bulb holders as below.
Part No.: 518041 from Rimmerbros.co.uk
NOTE ; Stop / Tail bulb holder from a TRIUMPH TR6 does not have an earth spade terminal .
Above bulb holders were purchased from

The following is one method of converting the rear light unit to take Triumph TR6 bulb holders .
NOTE ;
BEFORE YOU START MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE ENOUGH WIRE
AND THE CORRECT WIRING CONNECTORS FOR THE BULB HOLDERS
AND THAT YOU HAVE ALL THE TOOLS REQUIRED
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 1 } First remove the access panels { One behind the rear washer bottle at the drivers side and the other behind the spare wheel }
{ 2 } Next remove the six pin wiring connector which is located in the centre of the light unit by moving the plastic retaining clip out of the way .
{ 3 } You will need an 8mm or 5/16 AF quarter inch drive socket to remove the four retaining nuts from the rear light unit {One at the top , one at the bottom , and two in the middle}
{ 4 } Remove light unit and rubber sealing gasket and you end up with ;
ROBIN Mk2 & Mk3 STANDARD REAR LIGHT UNIT .
Note the dirt encrusted bottom two bulb holders from spray thrown up by the back wheel !
Rubber sealing gasket

{ 5 } Remove the bulb holders and , with a screwdriver or long nose pliers ,
gently prise off the metal strips and the wiring connector
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 6 } And you end up with
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 7 } Gently break of the remaining tags
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{8}Prise out the inner metal rings only on the top three holes {Indicator , stop/tail , reverse}
Do not prise out the bottom fog lamp ring as it is a large reflector ring.
and this is what the internal ring looks like
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 9 } Very gently file the pimples and the snapped off tabs nice and flush
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 10 } Use a half round smooth file to gently open out the Indicator , Stop / Tail and Reverse light holes a little at a time .
Only take a little off at a time and keep trying to fit the triumph TR6 bulb holders in the holes till they fit .
Of course you can also use an electric drill or a dremel type tool to speed things up .
Now , VERY GENTLY , open up the bottom fog lamp hole .
If the ring falls out when you are opening up the hole
just drill a couple of holes right through the plastic
and the metal ring and secure with self tappers
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 11 } Pull the wiring and the connector out through the rear holes
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 12 } Cut the connector off
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 13 } Attach a six section wiring block connector of your own choice
for the earth wire links .
{ Or just twist and solder them altogether then wrap insulating tape around the join } .
Attach single block connectors to the other wires { or bullet connectors }
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 14 } Cut five earth wires approx 3 inches long
and then loop the five earth wires
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 15 } Cut 4 earth wires approx 12 inches long and attach to the other side of the connector block .
Attach new lengths of coloured wires which are approx 12 to 15 inches long to the relevant colour .
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 16 } Bring the wires back inside the boot
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 17 } Attach the bulb holder to the relevant coloured wire with the correct side female spade making sure that the earth wire goes on the correct terminal.
The 6 pin connectors are numbered from 1 to 6

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
{ 19 } Try out the wired up bulb holders to check that they are working before you refit the rear light unit
{ 20 } Refit the rear light unit and fit the bulb holders then check that they still function
{ 21 } Go and have a cup of tea and give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done
