The Royal William public house stood for many years at the west end of the village of Cox Green. The building still stands but it is now a private residence.

1886: Sunderland Daily Echo, 15th July. News article: Houghton-le-Spring Petty Sessions. John Edward Rivett, landlord of the Royal William Inn, Coxgreen,

was fined 20s and costs for permitting drunkeness on his licensed premises and his license was ordered to be endorsed. The Bench advised the

defendant to get out of the house.
