Riverside Inns etc.

At least two dozen public houses, inns, temperance bars etc. served the riverside community between Chatershaugh in the west and Cox Green in the east. Most of these are long gone and, in most cases, forgotten, but the following pages are an attempt to gather and publicly record the known information about these establishments and I welcome any additional information or feedback you may have.

It is no exaggeration to say that public houses (etc) have been in existence in this area for hundereds of years, changing hands, landlords / publicans as the years passed. In many cases the names have endured. Indeed, some of the hostelries themselves have endured and still exist today such as the well-known Biddick Inn and Havelock Arms.

As well as by the local inhabitants themselves, the hostelries here were well-supported by the keelman community during the 18th and much of the 19th century.
