Ferry

For many years a ferry boat operated across the river Wear at Chatershaugh. It was know as the Chatershaugh Ferry and also the Biddick Ferry and is marked as such on several old maps. It gave its name to the nearby Ferry Boat Inn in Chatershaugh. It should be remembered that before the road bridge was opened in 1890, ferry boats were the only means of crossing the river whenever it was too high to ford.
