Cox Green is a small hamlet on the south bank of the Wear partly in this (Penshaw) township and partly in West Herrington, about 1 mile north, and has a station on the Bishop Auckland and Penshaw branch of the North Eastern railway. In this hamlet are quarries, the stone from which is of a superior quality for resisting the action of fire.
