9.06.6 KEYWORDS

· Ion – atom or group of atoms with a charge

· Cation – atom or group of atoms with a positive charge

· Anion – atom or group of atoms with a negative charge

· Ionic Bond – Strong electrostatic attraction between anion and cation

· Giant Structure – 3D substance that has no defined end (ie can continue growing so long as more material is available). Also known as a lattice

· Ionic Lattice – 3D structure of alternating anions and cations

· Dot-Cross Diagram – diagram that shows electrons as dots and crosses

· Ball & Stick Model –lattice model where ions are solid spheres and bonds are plastic sticks

· Empirical Formula – lowest ration between anion and cation (eg NaCl rather than Na12Cl12 or CaCl2 rather than Ca12Cl24)
