Essential Question:

  • How do I provide students with feedback from which they will ACTUALLY learn?
  • How do I make my comments meaningful and something students can use to improve?
  • How will you provide feedback for an essay in an engaging and developmentally appropriate way?
  • How do I help improve students’ writing with feedback that’s helpful?

Agenda:

Feedback Considerations

Information:

This is an example of how good teachers have traditionally graded:

How long did it take to do this for all your students? How does this improve student achievement for the next essay? How is this actionable? What if they don't understand what you intend? What can students learn from this? What would be the point of this? Does it really prove that you're a good teacher?

The 7 things to Remember about Feedback by John Hattie - University of Melbourne

Considering the content on feedback that you just read, why is the following obsolete?

Steve Ventura - Assessment Results and Feedback

Suggestion: instead of marking up everything. just choose 3 or 4 and make them correct them. If they learn 3-4 items per paper, by the end of the year how many writing practices did they learn? Wouldn't you be happy if they learned 20 items from you this year?
