Law 23 ‘Dead Ball’
1. The BALL IS DEAD WHEN:
Ø finally settled in the hands of the w/k or bowler
Ø the umpire and both teams cease to regard it as in play
Ø boundary is scored
Ø batsman is dismissed
Ø ball becomes trapped between bat and person or lodges in clothing / equipment of batsman or umpire
Ø lodges in a protective helmet of fielder
Ø any form of illegal fielding takes place
Ø hits a protective helmet placed on ground
Ø an award of penalty runs for fielder illegally returning to field
Ø call of lost ball
Ø umpire calls over or time
The umpire MAY call ‘Dead Ball’.
2. BALL FINALLY SETTLED – is a matter for the umpire to decide.
3. Umpire may call ‘Dead Ball’ for 1.
Ø He intervenes in the case of unfair play
Ø Serious injury to player or umpire is apparent
Ø Leaves his normal position to consult
Ø One or both bails falls from striker’s wicket before he has chance to play the ball
Ø Satisfied that the striker is not ready to receive
Ø Striker is distracted by noise or movement (does not count as part of over)
Ø Bowler drops the ball accidentally
Ø He is required to do so under any law (e.g. leg bye).
4. BALL CEASES TO BE DEAD
when the bowler begins his run up or bowling action.
5. ACTION ON CALL OF ‘DEAD BALL’
if before striker has not had the opportunity to play then NOT counted in over. If after, no additional ball to be allowed (unless wide or ‘No Ball’).
