After playing cricket from 1950s to 1991 with Town Clerk's, Nalgo, Earles Pelican,Comet and Hull Zingari I retired following broken fingers, pulled muscles and a tendency to miss too many straight balls!
After a couple of years with Saturday afternoons occupied with gardening and shopping I decided to contact Jack Yates and joined his and Ken Kendrew's classes which were then held once a week from October to March. I started umpiring in 1994 and eventually became ACUS qualified in 1997. I started umpiring in the Amateur League anddespite Jack advising that such things happen only rarely to Umpires had a lost ball, broken bail, a runner and a query re a substitute in my first two games!
Having umpired in the Amateur League I graduated to the Humberside Federation, Pennant Alliance and Humber Don Leagues and now in the East Yorkshire CA. I have also enjoyed games in the Hull Circle Cup, University League, Lord's Taverners and ECB Yorkshire Area Junior games and the occasional Newland Evening league.
