George Brown is another highly respected and long serving local umpire who umpired for over fifty years, and he is a man with a super sense of humour. George began umpiring when he was in the RAF after an injury forced him to stop playing. He umpired RAF and inter-service matches as well as the RAF v the British embassies in Paris.
George came to East Yorkshire in 1968 when he was attached to RAF Leconfield. He soon began umpiring in the local leagues, standing in the EYCC and the Pennant Alliance for example, and has fond memories of grounds such as Whitby, Scarborough and Pickering. He has taken great enjoyment from his umpiring career, especially the memories of the friendships he made with his umpiring colleagues in this area.
In the RAF George was a Chief Technician and attained the rank of sergeant. He also served with NATO forces. Outside of cricket George has been happily married to Gloria for over fifty years and has enjoyed his holidays, especially those in Ireland and Scotland. He also is a very keen gardener. He still enjoys occasional forays to grounds such as Driffield to watch local matches.
