In 1864, John appeared as a witness at a murder trial. Rebecca Hunt (an 'interesting looking girl', according to the Birmingham Post) was accused of murdering her own child (she was later found guilty of manslaughter) and John had let her out of King's Norton workhouse the morning after the child died.
