About the Author
Geoff Thompson (Geoff is pronounced the same as Jeff for us in the USA). He is from Coventry, England where he worked for eight years as a doorman / bouncer at various night clubs. During his time as a nightclub doorman, he found that what he had learned was inadequate for the reality of violence. Thompson came to realize that the techniques encouraged and practiced in touch-contact and semi-contact martial arts were not always suitable for self-defence. During his 8 years as a doorman, he developed a small core direct and simple methods to deal with conformational self-defense.
His ranks and certifications are as follows:
· 6th degree black belt Shotokan Karate
· 1st degree black belt Judo
· Amateur Boxing Association Instructor certificate
· High-level coaching awards for wrestling

Good production. Looks to have been done is his practice area. Maybe a few years ago. Sound is good and video is OK.

10 minutes of the video.
Key Concepts:
· Use your hands and arms to form a fence to keep the range to at least 18 inches
· Use your hands to feel for advances
· Give options for the person to leave
· What to look for that shows they are going to attack.
· Use a question to trigger your attack and to cause them to pause
· Hit First
· Hit Hard
· Escape
The Review:
In this video Mr. Thompson provides some information about how to use your hands and arms to form a "Fence" between you and an attacker. He addresses the range that most fights occur in (18 inches) and not the 3 to 4 feet that often martial artist train for. He also describes body language to watch for that indicates the person is going to attack or not. He also provides information on how to give them a way out to prevent the confirmation from becoming physical. These are the situations that he faced while being a doorman such as having to ask someone to leave when they don’t want to or not letting them in. This does not cover ambushes.
NOTE: He does not claim to have come up with it and even states other have done it before. This is just his take on it and experience of using it in real life as a bouncer.

Disclaimer - I found some bootlegged copies of Mr. Thompson's work available for download online. I provided him a list of the sites and gave him information on how to remove the copies. Mr. Thompson sent me this and another DVD as a way to saying thank you. I don't believe the gift has influenced my notes but wanted to let you know. My purpose is not to say "This is a Great DVD" or to say "This is a bad DVD" but to let you know what is on the DVD so you can make informed purchasing decisions.

Introduction to the Fence
What is the Fence
Doing the Fence
Needs to be very non-treating / casual. They must not know the fence is up and they are being controlled. If they do, they will fight for control.
Proactive Trapping
Use your lead hand to hold distance
Use your lead hand (left if you are right handed) to control his right hand
Use your back hand ready for attack.
Keep the fence up.
Don’t put it up and take it down
Keep moving don’t getting to staring match
Control the center line.
Stepping off to side will put him off balance
Stepping off to the side will open up targets (Jaw line) Avoid mouth and nose and eye
Strike First!!
Got to sort this out in your mind. We have always been taught not to hit 1st.
Know your law. Most states “If you feel you are endanger and you need to attack to prevent it, you can”
You cannot block and counter.
If there is more than one you may die!!
Body Language - If you touch the persons lead hand:
If they pull back violently, they are going to fight
If they drop their chin, they are going to fight
If they don’t pull back and allow you to touch it, you may be able to talk them out of a fight.
If they touch you more than once, they may be getting the range.
Body Language – Distance
If they close the distance, they are going to attract
If they back up and posture, they most likely are not going to fight.
Verbal Language – Watch for the following as indicators of attack
Single syllable being repeated “What” “And” “Fuck”
Very short sentences. Caveman speak
Silence
The Attack
Attack 1st
Attack as hard as you can!! You have given him chances to leave and he hasn’t.
You must know how to attack.
Run a way.
Practice attacking from close range about 18 inches. Understand that most martial arts practice attacks from a much larger range.
Ask a question just before you attack. Serves to important parts:
Engages the persons brain and causes them to pause.
Gives you a trigger to attack. Practice the question when you practice the attack.
Practice with more than one attacker
You have to hit first
You have to hit hard
You can use a side fence (you perpendicular to the person) and head butt them.
Keep in mind that most areas if you have more than one attacker and you “Believe” they are going to attack, you can attack 1st and with lethal force. (This is not on the tape but the case in Kentucky and some other states in the USA.)
Different ver of the Fence
The TR Method. Work from a side fence (you perpendicular to the person) and head butt them.
KA Method. Works into them using a submissive manor working along the side like “Hey let’s talk about this and not fight. Let’s go over here” and by this get to the side of them and then come back in with a hook and knock them out.
JG Method. Just as he would attack, he would drop down below their tunnel vision and pop up with a hook and knock them out. The drop would disorientate them.
Dave Bridge Method – Best used in loud environments like clubs. He would put his hand up to his ear like he couldn’t hear them (using his elbow to keep up the fence) and say “I can’t hear you. What did you say?” (note the question) and then he would slap them with the other hand to the jaw or ear. Also has the advantage of when the police show up you can say “I just slapped him”
John Anderson Method – He would try and control the lead hand. If they let him, he would try to lead them out. If not, he would prep for an attack. If they moved back in, he would push them back (giving them a chance to walk away). If they came back, he would attack. Timing is very important here. When you push them away (make a gap) you can Balloon up, Pace side to side, get loud, issue a threat “If you come back over here I’m going to rip your head off and then I’ll come to where you live finish it”. This triggers the flight response and gives them the “That guy is crazy” excuse to leave. You must create a gap. If he comes over the line, you have to attack!
Environmental Fence – Use something physical as your fence. Use a chair, a table, a car. If you are in a car, stay in, lock the doors and drive away.
You have to make the fence part of your life.
· Practice it when talking with normal peoples in non conformational settings.
· Has to be unconscious.
