RICHARD LAMPREY, Postmaster, Harbour Master, Savings Bank agent, and Registrar of Births and Deaths, Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, is the third son of the late Mr. Charles Lamprey, of the General Post Office, Melbourne. He was born in that city in 1865, and at the conclusion of his education immediately joined the Telegraph Department as messenger at Collingwood, Victoria. After five years' service he was transferred to the head office, Melbourne, where he spent about two years and a half as telegraph messenger. An appointment was then given him as assistant in the post office at Rosedale, Gippsland, which he retained for three years. In 1879 Mr. Lamprey applied to the South Australian Government for a position as telegraph operator, at a considerable advance in salary, and was successful in obtaining the appointment. After remaining at the head office for two years, he was transferred to Gawler Railway Station as Postmaster, and here established the splendid record of eighteen years' continuous service. This was followed by nine and a half years at Quorn. In 1903 his health began to fail, and upon the advice of his medical adviser to seek a change of climate was removed to Port Victor, which experiment, however, failed of the desired result.
In consequence of his continued indisposition, the authorities sanctioned his transfer to Kingscote, where he now holds the responsible positions referred to above. Since Mr. Lamprey entered upon his duties at Kangaroo Island the postal work has increased by leaps and bounds, the returns from the sales of stamps alone having doubled within a space of two years.
He married [Ellen] the only daughter of Mr. Karl Kamprod, of Kingscote, formerly of Gawler, South Australia, and of a family of seven children four sons and one daughter survive.
