GARIBALDI DAVID BUICK, agriculturist, "Brownlow Farm," Kingscote, is the sixth son of Mr. John Buick, of American River, Kangaroo Island, where the gentleman under review was born in 1862. He received his education chiefly by private tuition, and at an early age began to assist his father on the farm, gaining a good general knowledge of the industry which has been invaluable to him during his subsequent career. In 1884 he purchased 9,000 acres of land on American River, of which he cleared about 1,600 acres, and brought a large portion under cultivation of barley and oats, frequently reaping from thirty to forty bushels of barley to the acre, and at times forty bushels of oats. Combining grazing pursuits with agriculture, he has found wool-growing a profitable branch of the business, and ran a flock of about 1,500 sheep on the estate.
In July, 1906, a favourable opportunity occurring of disposing of his property, he sold out, and a few months later removed to Kingscote, where he has since acquired a nice holding of 250 acres of excellent farming land. He has already begun the working of this property, and his thorough practical experience will enable him to develop it on the best lines to ensure satisfactory results.
Mr. Buick, while at American River, discharged the duties of postmaster for about eighteen years. Since coming to Kingscote he has shown his sympathy with manly sport by joining and displaying a keen interest in the local Rifle Club.
He has been twice married. His first wife, Blanche (second daughter of the late Mr. W. H. Carter, head keeper of the lighthouse at Cape Willoughby), to whom he was united in August, 1889, died in 1900, leaving two daughters. In April, 1904, he married again, the present Mrs. Buick being Cora, daughter of Mr. Jules Gottschalk, late of Edithburgh, by whom he has issue one son and one daughter.
