CECIL WESTERN, fruiterer and nurseryman, Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, is the eldest son of Mr. W. J. Western, vigneron and fruitgrower, of Marion, South Australia, and was born in that district in 1884. He received his scholastic training at Way College and Prince Alfred College, and having completed his studies immediately joined his father at Marion, where he gained a good general knowledge of the vinegrowing and horticultural industry. In 1905 he was attracted by reports of Kangaroo Island, and paid a visit of inspection, giving special attention to the more important posts in the interior, with a view to settling on the land. He was most favourably impressed with the productive resources of the island, and, convinced that a prosperous future lies before it, is now taking up property with the intention of growing apples and other fruits for purposes of export.
At the moment he is established as a fruit-merchant and nurseryman at Kingscote, and conducts business in large premises, where he is able to display his produce in the most attractive manner. He is in the fortunate position of being able to command the finest classes of fruit grown in the State of South Australia from his father's garden at Marion, so well and favourably known to consumers; and the easy facilities afforded for shipping the fruit at Glenelg, whence it comes direct to Kingscote, give every opportunity of receiving it freshly gathered from the trees. Arriving thus in splendid condition, the produce finds a ready market amongst the inhabitants of the island, and Mr. Western already has gained a wide connection, which is rapidly increasing.
