ALEXANDER BUICK, agriculturist and grazier, "Euralee Farm," Hog Bay, Kangaroo Island, is a native of the island, having been born at American River in 1876 [9 Dec 1864 - Ed.], and is the eldest son of the late Mr. David Weir Buick, of Hog Bay, where he received his scholastic training. At the close of his schooldays he assisted his father on the home property, during this period gaining an excellent initiation into the industry which he has followed ever since. Remaining with his parent until within three years of the death of the latter (which occurred in 1900), he decided in that year to sail for Western Australia, where, after engaging in farming pursuits for six months, he took up contracting work, spending altogether a year and a half in the sister State.Returning to Kangaroo Island he undertook the management of his late father's farm on behalf of his mother, and has continued successfully in the control of its operations ever since. An additional 2,000 acres of land acquired by Mr. Alexander Buick in the several localities of the American River, Salt Lagoon, and Antechamber Bay has given ample scope for the pursuance of an extensive farming and grazing industry, 1,200 sheep of the merino and crossbred types being carried by the various properties.
The gentleman under review, being of a retiring disposition, has never sought recognition in public offices of any kind, preferring to give the whole of his time and attention to the management of his estates.
In 1901 he married Violet May, eldest daughter of Mr. John Walters, of Glen Osmond, and has two sons and three daughters.
