"All along the trail [near Goa] we found enormous wide trees. One alone was enough to shade an entire caravan. Some had no leaves or branches and despite this, the trunk's shade was marvelous. Some of these trees had a pocket in the middle where rain water had gathered. Travelers could drink from these pools. In other cavities, there were bees and honey or birds' nests. Among these trees were some bearing fruits resembling prunes or apricots, and one which bore a long fruit like a cucumber. Oil extracted from these fruits and the seeds of the tree is used form many purposes in this land. It is used in cooking, fuel for lamps, for the skin, and even to smooth the wood of their dwellings. The oil is easy to find and is sold in all of the markets in jars or calabashess."
