"Late in the day, we approached what appeared to be a small oasis. The grove is surrounded by two orange trees. A little to the east is a rivulet, the clear waters of which form a cascade to keep up the freshness of the vegetation around them. The grounds, which are delightful, are planted with orange trees, citrons, bananas, and fine bombaces (cotton trees), which form an agreeable shade. From the top of the mountain, a great extent of the country is visible, with the windings of the Niger River, the picturesque banks of which heightened the effect of the landscape."
