"In the beginning of the journey, we became used to letting the caravan wander as camels searched for grazing land. We ceased doing this when one of our travelers, Abu Ziry, became lost in the desert. After this point, I dared not precede or trail the caravan. Abu Ziry was in a dispute with his uncle and the two traded insults in a loud dispute. Abu Ziry trailed the caravan to brood. When we turned to find him some hours later, he was lost. I advised his uncle to hire a guide to track him but he did not want to do this. The next morning, however, he relented and the guide searched for Abu Ziry's tracks. He found vestiges of footsteps which sometimes followed the main route and sometimes wandered; however, it was impossible to recover Abu Ziry. Two days later, we encountered another caravan which had similar news. One of their companions had separated from the group. Three days later, we found a dead body under a small tree.
