"It was necessary to wrap many layers of white clothing around our bodies for protection. While the heat was often unbearable, the wind, sand, and blistering sun were too powerful for bare skin. Our perspiration in the hottest part of the day would evaporate before we noticed it, and, except for under the arms, our bodies were quite dry. The layers were particularly useful at night when the temperatures would drop rapidly. Blankets were not enough to keep us from shivering through cold nights and the tightly wrapped clothing proved useful again."
