"Suddenly, a group of men were seen on the horizon--the Tuareg warriors, famed even in the North. The cringing guides put up no resistance; they not only paid tribute, but entertained them, for these proud, sinister-looking men, veiled to their eyes in the ritual litham clothing, inspired fear in all who met them. The Tuareg could have easily dispatched us, but a quick negotiation by the guides and gold coins from my purse persuaded them to let us continue. The Tuareg were marauders who extracted toll from all travelers. They had a very sophisticated code of honor, but were feared due to their ritualistic clothing and insolent proud bearing. I must admit that I was more awed than angry as they rode away with my coins."
