"One afternoon, the normally moderate breeze began to increase in speed. In a matter of moments, wind was whipping by us and beginning to swirl sand into our bodies and faces. Covering ourselves as best we could , we pressed on as there was no protection form the storm. The best we could do was walk beside our camels and use their bodies as shields. It was pointless to stop moving, but our vision and directions were greatly decreased. Mohamed suggested we move at a slow pace and wait out the storm. It surprised me that the desert became so dark due to the sand and wind. I have witnessed monsoons and snow storms but a sandstorm was an entirely different phenomenon."
