"Of course, the primary necessity for our trip though the Sahara was the camels, without which our crossing would have been impossible. We found six strong bulls and purchased them from their owners for a moderate price of 50 dinars each. We were told that they had made desert crossings numerous times and were able to travel for many days without water. Grazing was important, however, and we were told to allow the animals to stray from the path to eat. Water was crucial and we stored as much as we could in guerbas, goat-hide sacks, which were slung over the camels' backs. It was important to keep the bags off of the ground, for water would absorb through to the sand, leaving us in a disastrous position."
