"In addition to my normal clothing it was necessary to purchase thick linen veils to guard our faces from the sun, wind, and sand. Six goats and four sheep were slaughtered and the dried meat was packed along with rice, seeds, and fruits in smaller sacks. Hide tents and prayer mats were rolled around wooden stakes and other camping equipment such as posts, cups, and flint were bundled in another bag. My personal supplies, including letters, gold coins, and a copy of the Qu'ran among other things, I carried in a sack on my person. If I were tired I would fasten the bag to one of the many ropes which hung from the camels' backs. It appeared that the camels were extremely burdened but Mohamed, my assistant, insured me that the camels were capable of much more and that the load would be lightened as we traveled between villages, where we would renew our food and water stocks and other necessary supplies."
