Col. Francine Camp Meeting Minutes
For the year 2009
Meeting January 24, 2009
Hello and greetings. The following letter is a recap of the meeting held at our luncheon on January 24th, at Columbia II restaurant in Hammonton.
A very productive meeting was held at our recent Francine/Thorn luncheon. There were 22 Brothers and Sisters in attendance. The Camp was honored to have Department Commander Daniel Lynch in attendance.
Old Business:
The Camp by-laws need to be approved. The by-laws committee will review them and make recommendations for the next meeting.
New Business
The Camp has received two proclamations for the work in replacing plaque in front of the Gloucester County Court House. This plaque contains the names of the Civil War soldier from County Gloucester that died in the war. This plaque now sits in front of the monument. One proclamation was from the County and the other one is from the state. Both of these proclamations have been scanned and saved for posterity, by Commander Burnett. The cost of scanning these two documents was $13.55, and the expenditure was approved
The camp has authorized funds up to $100.00 for a new Camp website. Brother Alex Calabrese will check into a site on Yahoo that can hold more information then our present site.
The Camp has authorized a donation of $100.00 to be made to Autism Speaks in memory of Craig Lovett.
The two “Billy Yank” statues vandalized in front of the Camp Stockton monument have been replaced and repositioned closer to the monument in hopes of thwarting future vandalism. The camp thanks Woodbury Cement Company for installing the two statues.
The Camp has authorized the printing of new brochures. Junior Vice Commander Kenny has volunteered to undertake this project, and has “spruced up” the brochures with some added pictures and has printed 200 of them, at no cost to the Camp. Our thanks to Brother Kenny.
Dues are now due for 2009. As some of you may know there is a=2 0 dues increase due to an increase in per capita tax we pay to the Department of New Jersey. Dues are now $30.00 Please make your checks payable to Col. Francine Camp # 7 and mail them to David K. Hann PDC 440 Clark Drive Hammonton, NJ 08037. We would like to have the dues into the Camp by March 31st.
At present we are working on a new Camp roster. Please send any changes to me at the above address.
There is a petition to return Memorial Day to its right date of May 30th. This is bill (S-70). If you wish to sign the petition please go to the Sons web site at SUVCW.org.
We realize it has been a while since we have sent out a Camp newsletter. We hope to have one soon. If you would like to submit something for the newsletter please send it to me. Senior Vice Commander Mossbrucker and I are working on it. We hope to have one out in the next couple of weeks.
The Camp has authorized the purchase of five ROTC medals. These medals will be awarded as the requests come in.
Commander Burnett has issued a challenge to raise $279.45 to purchase 15 luminaries honoring t he men of the 7th buried in the National Cemetery in Gettysburg. The luminaries are placed on the graves on Remembrance Day November 21st, 2009 and are an awe inspiring site. Commander Burnett has purchased the first and there are still a number of them left. This list of soldiers is below and this challenge will run until the end of October. If you wish to donate to this fund please make your check payable for $18.63 made payable to the Camp and send it to me. Please indicate which soldier you would like this in memory of so we can have his name and your name placed in the program. If we exceed our goal we will make donations in memory of those soldiers of the 7th killed at Gettysburg and buried elsewhere.

The Gettysburg Foundation is trying to raise money to bury power lines, and the removal of non-historic tree around Devil’s Den and Little Round Top. Rather than a pledge of so much per mile, the foundation is looking for a flat donation of anywhere from $10.00 and up. If you wish to donate please make your check payable to the Gettysburg Foundation and mail it to me.
The Camp would like to welcome a new Brother , Martin Blaskey. Brother Martin has been a fixture at a number of Francine Camp events since Memorial Day. Martin is a reenactor with Company D, 7th New Jersey Infantry . We met Brother Martin courtesy of Brother Bill Righter . Brother Martin on behalf of the Francine Camp, welcome.
I still have a number of membership medals available. If you wish to purchase one they are $20.00. Please may your check payable to the Camp and mail it to me.
Commander Burnett has instituted a new award. The James H Todd Civil War Memorial Award. This award is to recognize any Camp Brother making a significant contribution towards preserving, restoring or producing new Civil War Memorials. Private James H. Todd was a member of Company K, 69th PA and was killed in action at Gettysburg. He is the ancestor of Brother Wayne Johnson. It is only fitting with the amount of work that this man has done towards preservation that the first recipient of this award is Past Camp Commander Wayne Johnson. Congratulations Brother Wayne.

Meeting August 15, 2009
Dear Brothers,
A small but productive meeting of the Camp was held at the home of Commander Burnett. The following are the minutes of the BBQ meeting.
The meeting open at 2:50 pm with the pledge of allegiance and with 7 Brothers, 1 junior member, and 1 guest present. There was no Treasurers report but given the balance from the last meeting we should have roughly $5,322.09 in our account.
Correspondence was received from Past Camp Commander Tom Corcoran, with a request of a Camp roster and 5 grave registration forms. PCC Corcoran sent us his greetings and is glad to hear that the Camp is doing well. We also received a thank you card from Past Department Auxiliary President Susan Jamieson, thanking the Camp for the donation of flowers and for the card sent on behalf of her mother Florence Spring. Past National President Florence Spring passed away on July 21st. I had the honor of knowing Sister Florence for a number of years and she will be missed.
Under new business the following topics were discussed.
A report was given by Commander Burnett highlighting the events at the Department Encampment. There is a new Camp forming in North Jersey, possibly in the Kearny area. It is hoped that they will be underway soon. It was also reported that Garfield Camp # 4 is in danger of folding. The Camp is the oldest in the Department. It is hoped that an influx of dual members might help. The Department has started a fund raiser in hopes of raising much needed revenue. This will be discussed a little later in these minutes. The Department had a gain of just 1 new member last year. It is hoped that each Camp will be able to recruit new brothers this year. New flag brochures were distributed. These are the Regimental flags that are on display at the Department of State Building in Trenton. Included among the flags in the brochure is the flag of the 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. The Camp had donated $250.00 last year towards the reprinting of this brochure. There was talk about each Camp possibly donating to help offset the Eagle Scout certificate program.
We are approaching the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and the Department is making plans to help in the commemoration.
A committee has been established to hopefully produce a book highlighting New Jersey Civil War and GAR artifacts. PDC David Hann will chair this committee. The Department is working on a change to the by-laws. This change is needed in order to bring us current with the Constitution and Regulations of the Order.
Under new Camp business, discussion were held about the Camp newsletter. A suggestion was made that perhaps we could highlight an ancestor or two in the newsletter. The ancestor article would be written by each Brother. The Garfield Museum in Lawrenceville is looking to have copies of each Camp’s newsletter sent to them. We hope to be working on a new newsletter soon.
Raffle Tickets. The New Jersey Department has started a fund raiser. The raffle item is a resin copy of the 13th New Jersey’s monument at Gettysburg. They were originally made by Four Winds studios in Gettysburg and are no longer in production. It has an estimated value of $100.00. The tickets are $1.00 a piece and we are asking if each Brother could try to sell a book of 10. If you are interested please let me know.
There was discussion about the Camp donating to the Department to help offset the Eagle Scout certificate program. There was some debate on whether to make a donation to a Eagle Scout that is working on a Civil War related theme, or to help offset the cost. Motion was made to table this discussion until the October meeting.
We have received the applications of Giuseppe (Joe) Trepiccione , and his son Joshua. We would like to take this time to welcome them to the Camp. Joe is an Associate member, and Joshua is a Junior member working on his linage as he is related to James Lowther of the 11th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry
Under old business we had an update on the Gettysburg luminaries. As you all know, Commander Burnett has issued a challenge to raise $279.45 to purchase 15 luminaries honoring the men of the 7th buried in the National Cemetery in Gettysburg. The luminaries are placed on the graves on Remembrance Day November 21st, 2009 and are an awe inspiring site. Commander Burnett has purchased the first and there are only 5 left. This challenge will run until the end of October. If you wish to donate to this fund please make your check payable for $18.63 made payable to the Camp and send it to me. As of this date I am happy to report that we have not only met that goal but are just 5 candles away from honoring ALL the members of the 7th killed or mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. If we exceed this goal we will honor other New Jersey soldiers killed in the battle and buried in the National Cemetery.
The following is a list of events
Sunday, September 27th. Antique and Bottle Show at Historic Batsto Village. This is a last minute event that we have been invited to. They would like to have a few re-enactors in uniform. The event is from 9:00 to 4:00.
Sunday, October 18th. Country Living Fair at Historic Batsto Village. The event is from 10:00 to 4:00. Set up time is at 9:00 AM. This event will serve as nominations for new Camp Officers. If you are interested in a Camp Office please let me know. Please note that you must be present at this event for nomination. The meeting will be at 3:00 PM to allow those Brothers that attend Church services to attend. I will be honest Brothers, we have had a light attendance at the past couple of meetings. This is your Camp and we would like to have your input.
Wednesday, Nov. 11th (Veteran's Day) SVC Fred Mossbrucker has been contacted by a politician from Camden County to ask if Brothers could participate as a Color Guard for a veterans ceremony. More information to follow.
Friday, November 20th. Remembrance Day weekend in Gettysburg, PA. Brothers the following will be a long e-mail. Please excuse me as I have some changes that you might be interested in. I know that a number of Brothers arrive on Gettysburg on Friday and I have been offered something you might be interested in. We have been offered a tour on Friday, of the actions of the 7th at Gettysburg. We will be retracing the steps of the 7th. I took this tour when I was in Gettysburg back in April. This tour is free and is given by John Winkelman who is a licensed battlefield guide. John had an ancestor in the 7th and has offered this tour in thanks in exchange for some copies of photos and some 7th information that I've provided to him from my collection.
This is a walking tour and will encompass about a mile and a half. This will be on Friday ONLY! We will still hold our ceremony at the monument. The times for both will be announced. If you are interested please let me know ASAP. I would like to find out how many could make the tour by the October meeting. If we only can get a few Brothers for the tour, I will try to reschedule it for the spring as we could carpool up for this. If we do reschedule it, this tour WILL NOT take the place of our annual Gettysburg bus trip with Brother Steve Wright. One more note about Remembrance Day, if you are planning to stay in Gettysburg for the weekend I would suggest that you make reservations ASAP.
Saturday November 21, 2009 Remembrance Day Parade Gettysburg, PA.
8:00AM: Eisenhower Inn The activities of the day will start with an SVR breakfast. This is open to all members of the SVR and their families. Reservations can be made by contacting Lt. Col. Don Darby at his headquarters. The cost is $10.00 per person before November 1, 2008, $15.00 after November 1, 2009. There is a form in the latest edition in the Banner for this.
At 11:00 A.M. , in Ziegler’s Grove, there will be a brief service at the GAR (Woolson Monument) Memorial. This is the 53rd annual ceremony of the Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor their founders and forefathers. All are invited to attend. For those that attend we will leave directly from there to form up for the parade. For those that do that attend the ceremony, the parade will form at 12:00 PM on Lefever Street and move at 1:00 PM sharp. The route of the parade will be as follows; Exiting Lefever Street onto East Confederate Ave. and turning west onto East Middle Street. Upon striking Baltimore Street the parade will turn south and then veer south west onto Steinwehr Ave where it will terminate at the National Park.
The luminaries in the National Cemetery are on Saturday evening from 5:30 till 9:30 PM. I would like to suggest that we all meet at a time to be announced.
Sunday November 22nd. Breakfast at the Eisenhower Inn. Last year JVC Kenny had a great idea. Since most of us stay at the Eisenhower Inn, JVC Kenny thought that it would be a great idea if we all met for breakfast together as a Camp and Auxiliary. The Eisenhower has a great breakfast buffet and it runs about $9.00. I thinks this would be a great way to end the weekend before we all head for home.
I still have some tee shirts for sale as well as membership medals. The shirts are $10.00 and I only have medium. large, and a few extra large. The membership medals are $20.00. I will have these items with me at the October meeting.
Inclosing the Camp thanks Commander Burnett for the wonderful hospitality at the BBQ meeting. There was plenty of good food, beverages, and fellowship. Brother Andrew can really cook! Thank you for opening up your home to us. We hope to have a good turnout for the October meeting at Batsto. This is your Camp and we need your input! We have been averaging only 8 Brother per meeting. Please try to attend this important meeting. As I have stated before if anyone is interested in running for an Camp office, please let me know. Hope to see you all on Sunday, October 18th!

Meeting November 7, 2009
Dear Brothers,
A productive meeting was held on Saturday November 7 at the Atlantic County Library West, in Hammonton with 10 Brothers and one junior present. A number of items were brought up for discussion for the Camp’s consideration.
We have received word that Brother Joe Cloyd is ill. Please keep Brother Joe in your thoughts and prayers.
Under old business, we had tabled discussion about donating money to the Department to help offset costs towards the Eagle Scout certificate. We revisited this issue and got a clearer understanding with the help of PCC John Makos. Brother John is the Department Eagle Scout coordinator. Brother John will give us an update at our next meeting on how we should proceed. Motion was made to table this until the next meeting.
A note of thanks was sent to the Woodbury Cement Company for the repairs made to the Camp Stockton Monument. As you may remember the monument was vandalized last year. The two “Billy yank” statues were toppled over destroying them. These two statues were replaced and set back closer so that it will be harder to vandalize them.
The New Jersey Department is looking for items of interest to publish in the Department newsletter.
I am happy to report that the Commander’s challenge has not only been met but exceeded. When all was said and done Brothers from the Camp and Sisters from the Auxiliary sponsored 35 luminaries. Well done!
Under new business we initiated two new Brothers and one Junior member into the Camp. We would like to welcome new Brothers Joe Trepiccione, Charlie Harlan, and new Junior member Joshua Trepiccione. Welcome to our Camp!
A motion was made that we purchase 3 wreaths, for Remembrance Day. Two were purchased by the Camp and one by the Auxiliary. One wreath will be placed at the 7th’s Monument, one at the New Jersey section in the National Cemetery, and the Auxiliary will place theirs at the Elizabeth Thorn statue. The cost is $106.00 for the two wreaths.
A motion was made to purchase Camp supplies from National. The total is 146.50.
Nominations were entertained for new Camp Officers. Your new Camp Officers are as follows, Fred Mossbrucker Commander, Shawn Kenny Senior vice Commander, Duane Conant Junior Vice, Dave Hann PDC Secretary, and PCC Andrew Burnett Treasurer. These Brothers will be installed at the annual Francine/Thorn dinner on January 16th at Peter’s Diner in Williamstown.
The Camp would like to thank Commander Burnett for all of his hard work over these past two years, and Brother Steve Clair for his taking the yeoman task as Treasurer. Thank you Brothers for all that you do for our Camp and it has been a pleasure to serve with you.
Under good of the order the Camp has some tee shirts and membership medals for sale. I will have these items at the dinner on the 16th.
Under the Patriotic Instructors report, Brother Wayne gave us the details of his recent trip including his Army reunion, his trip to Vicksburg and New Orleans. Brother Wayne had some outstanding pictures of Vicksburg and the WW2 museum in New Orleans. Thank you for your report and it’s great to have you back on New Jersey soil.
With no other business the meeting was concluded at 11:50.
Yours in F, C, & L,
