Francine Camp Meeting Minutes

August 23, 2014

Dear Brothers,

A productive meeting was held on Saturday August 23, 2014 with 12 Brothers present and 1 guests present. A number of items were brought up for discussion for the Camp’s consideration.

Minutes approved.

Treasurer's Report: - $ 2,003.27 in the checking account. $20.01 in the savings account.

Sick report: Brother Jimmy Williams has been diagnosed with bladder cancer. Daniel Mossbrucker is sick with a case of Mersa, PCC Wayne Johnson is scheduled for back surgery to help with a pinched nerve in his back. Brother Wayne hopes to be with us in October at the Batsto Country Living Fair. Please keep these Brothers in your prayers.

Unfinished Business:

A reminder that we are approaching Remembrance Day in Gettysburg. The parade is set for Saturday November 15. If you plan to stay for the weekend it is suggested that you reserve a room now.

We still have a few Brothers that owe dues for 2013. We will be contacting these Brothers soon. If you think you owe dues please contact me.

Commander's Annual Challenge" is a chance to sponsor a luminary in honor of the members of the 7th that were killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. The luminaries are $18.63 each and the money helps to defray the cost of the luminaries placed in the Gettysburg National Cemetery during Remembrance Day weekend. Of course you can sponsor these in the name of a loved one or you own Civil War ancestor. If you are interested you can mail your check made payable to the Francine Camp to our Camp Secretary. If you wish to sponsor someone from the 7th, the list is below.

New Business:

After a few years off the Camp would like to revive the Gettysburg Bus trip. The date we are looking at is March 28, 2015 at an estimated cost of $60.00 per person. We will have more information at our nest meeting.

We had a brief discussion about the New Jersey Department Encampment. Congratulations to PCC Fred Mossbrucker who is the new Department Senior Vice Commander.

We received an application from James F. Smith from Medford, NJ. His ancestor was Pvt. George Galloway Co. C, 23rd PA Inf. and Co. F, 82nd PA. Inf.

The Eagle Theater in Hammonton has a new play in production called The Civil War: The Musical, starring Broadway performer Derrick Cobey. This engaging score, flourished with country, folk and rock influence, features the region’s most accomplished performers, adorned in time-period costume and décor. Drawing on letters, diaries, firsthand accounts, and the inspirational words of Abraham Lincoln, Fredrick Douglass and Walt Whitman, this epic thematic masterwork passionately puts a human face on the greatest mark made in American history, guaranteed to leave you breathless and your spirit lifted. We hope to be able to set up a display in the lobby to promote the Camp. The dates are September 19 & 20, 25 – 27, October 2 – 4, 8 – 11 | 8pm September 21, 28 and October 5, 3pm. The Camp authorized the following purchases. 3 Membership medals, 1 Junior membership medals, 3 SVR medals, 1 SUVCW grave marker, and 2 wreaths for Remembrance Day.

Remembrance Day Events Gettysburg, PA

Friday November 14, Honor ceremony and wreath laying. At 1:00 PM we will meet at the 7 monument for our wreath laying ceremony. Following our ceremony there are a number of us who will have our picture take at the 7 monument by Del’s Victorian photos. Following that we will proceed to the National Cemetery to place a wreath at the NJ section and then proceed over to Evergreen Cemetery to place a wreath at the monument for Elizabeth Thorn.

Saturday November 15, Remembrance Day Parade Gettysburg, PA. Details to follow as we get closer.

Good of the Order:

Brother Alex Arnold and Brother Scott Hann are heading back to college. We all wish them the best of luck.

JVC Charlie Harlan will make the arrangement with Del’s Victorian photos this year. He has suggested that we wear kepi’s or forage caps, no gloves, no medals, and just waist belts. Brother Harlan will also look into having Sunday morning breakfast again at the Pike restaurant in Gettysburg.

The camp observed a moment of silence for Brother CJ Mossbrucker who passed way. We ask that you keep the family in prayer.

November 8, 2014

A productive meeting of the Camp was held on Saturday November 8, 2014, with 8 Brothers and 3 guests present. A number of items was brought up for the Camp’s consideration.

Brothers in distress: Brother Jimmy Williams has passed away. Our condolences to the family. PCC Wayne Johnson is getting around much better. Daniel Mossbrucker is doing much better.

Check for $165.00 for three wreaths.

Unfinished Business:

Commander’s Challenge: We did not have a great turnout for the Commander’s Challenge this year. We will start collecting for next year starting at the February 28, 2015, meeting. Gettysburg bus trip: The bus trip is back on and is set for March 21, 2015. Cost $60.00 per person. Seats are on a first come first served basis. We will start collecting now for the trip. Dates for the meeting for 2015 are February 28, April 4, August 22, November 7.

We are still working for a date and location for the Francine/Thorn dinner. One idea is to have a picnic. We will work on this at the next meeting.

Good of the order: Dave Orem was with us today. His ancestor was William J. Orem who served in the 6th PA Cav. Rush’s Lancers. Dave brought a picture of his ancestor. Dave is submitting and application with the Camp.

Voted to do away with Francine award. We will still have the Commander’s award. This award will be given at the Commander’s discretion for any person or business that he wishes to recognize for outstanding service. Award will be a certificate.

New Business: Francine/Thorn luncheon turnout was light. We might have to look at a new date for next year, and we might have to go to a more centrally located to get our long distant Brothers to attend. The committee will be Wayne Grant, Frank Tomasello, and Fred Mossbrucker PCC

Elizabeth Thorn Auxiliary, we would like to invite them to the next meeting. A wife or daughter of a Brother can be a member without linage. We would like to see our auxiliary grow if you are interested please attend this meeting on April 26

SVR Unit. As our unit stands right now we have 16 members, to avoid confusion will have to maintain the rank structure within the SVR. David Hann serves as second lieutenant and Fred

Mossbrucker serves as First Sergeant. This is to avoid confusion with the reenacting group that many of us belong to.

Jack Kuepfer is in the Veterans Home. Camp approved to cover his dues. Jimmy Williams is in a nursing home. Please keep them in your prayers.

Initiated Stephen DeCasien as a member

The Camp met with the Thorn Auxiliary in hopes that can help them. The Auxiliary will continue. Membership in Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War can be obtained through eligibility in several ways:

1. Women who are lineal or collateral descendants, of soldiers, sailors or marines regularly mustered and honorably discharged from the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps of the United States of America during the War of the Rebellion 1861-1865. Daughter, grand- daughter, great -grand-daughter, niece, great-niece, etc., & legally adopted daughters qualify.

2. Mothers, wives, widows, daughters & legally adopted daughters of Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in good standing. (Not Associates)

3. Associate Memberships: Available to women who do not qualify through heredity, #1 & #2 above, who demonstrate a genuine interest in the Civil War and can subscribe to the purpose and objects of the Auxiliary. An Associate may vote and hold any office except that of National Vice-President and National President. Associates may not exceed one-third of the total membership of the Auxiliary at the time of election.

4. Junior Membership: For young ladies of not less than six (6) years of age.

This year is the 150th Anniversary of Arlington National Cemetery. There will be special Civil War tours on May 19, and June 2nd anyone wishing to go please contact John Makos

The Camp is going to order a new vinyl Camp Banner that will include our website address on it.

Atlantic County Museum is seeking donation for their new Veterans Museum. The site will be at the old Daniel Estell house located on Rt. 50 in Estell Manor.

Camp purchased two JROTC medals.

Brother Robert Makos will be deployed Qatar. Please keep him in your prayers.

As you know on Monday May 20, 2013, the New Jersey State Assembly convened and voted on Resolution Number 77, a Proclamation to make the month of May as "Civil War Veterans Recognition Month" in honor of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. This Proclamation passed by a vote of 78-0. It was supposed to go the Senate but it didn’t get there in time so it will go back to the Assembly. We will keep you informed.

Department Encampment June 7. We plan to car pool from Atlantic County Library, in Hammonton. If you want to go please let me know. We will meet at the Library 8:00 AM
