Ohio City was originally a part of Brooklyn Township.  It was incorporated as a municipality in 1836 and finally annexed to Cleveland in 1854.  The area was first settled by New Englanders and later by immigrants from Ireland and Germany who worked at the docks, mills, foundries and distilleries.  Ohio City is known for its beautiful houses, built during the late 19th century.  These homes are found on Franklin Blvd. and Clinton Ave..  Today the area is known for its residential and commercial restorations.  The commercial area of Ohio City is found at Lorain and West 25th Streets.  This area was called "Market Square".  The West Side Market was built in 1912.  This market became an Ohio City landmark in 1912 and is the largest indoor/outdoor market in the country.  The market offers many ethnic foods.  Located across from the market is Great Lakes Brewery.   Some of the mayors of Ohio City were Josiah Barber, Norman Baldwin, Richard Lord, Thomas Burnham and William Castle.  After being annexed by the City of Cleveland, this area was known as the near west side.  In the 19th century, Germans, Hungarians and Irish were living here.  Ohio City is home to St. Ignatius High School, the Carnegie Branch of the Cleveland Public Library, Franklin Castle, and Franklin Circle.  Franklin Circle was originally known as Franklin Place.  It was surveyed in 1836 and dedicated to public use by landowners Josiah Barber and Richard Lord.  Until 1857 it was used as an open-air farmers' market.  In 1857 the Cleveland City Council appropriated the circle for park use.  The Franklin Circle Christian Church was built on the south side of the circle and dedicated in 1883.

The Irish lived in three different areas within this neighborhood:  Whiskey Island, The Angle, and Irishtown Bend.
