E. F. Boyd & Son, Inc., one of the oldest African-American funeral homes in the Cleveland area, began in 1905. Elmer F. Boyd entered one of the few professions open to Blacks at the turn of the 20th century. He opened his business following graduation from Clark's College of Embalming in Cincinnati, Ohio (now the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science). After passing the state examination, Mr. Boyd opened an office on Central Avenue in the fall of 1905. It was known as the E. F. Boyd Funeral Parlor. He took on a partner, Lewis J. Dean, and officially opened in 1906; their initial establishment was described as "a combination funeral parlor and haber-dashery". In 1911, Dean left the business and Boyd with his wife, Cora continued, moving the business to 2544 Central Avenue. By 1919, he moved his operation to 2276 E. 43rd Street. During the early 1930's, Elmer was also joined in the business by his son, William F. With his business beginning to prosper, Elmer and Cora purchased the present headquarters location, 2165 E. 89th Street, in 1938. This site had formerly been the Slaughter Brothers Funeral Home. Along with that purchase, Boyd changed the name of his establishment to E. F. Boyd & Son Funeral Home. Elmer Boyd died in 1944. His wife and son along with his daughter-in-law, Mary W. continued the business after his death, improving and enhancing the overall business and its presence in the community.

At Brown-Forward Funeral Service, we have served Cleveland, Ohio and surrounding communities since the early 1800's. We are recognized as the oldest continuing funeral home in the state of Ohio. Almost two centuries ago the funeral home started as D.W. Duty, Cabinet Makers, was succeeded as J.H. Brown, then J. H. Brown-Son, & Forward, and, currently is known as Brown-Forward, Inc. Throughout the years, Brown-Forward, Inc. has remained a stable icon of caring and compassion for those in need. In our 176 years of recorded service, we have had five locations and only four different owners. Located in beautiful downtown Shaker Heights, our tastefully appointed facility is conveniently located minutes from the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and every major hospital in the Greater Cleveland area. In 1951 the business was acquired by G. Budd and Maxine Forward, and is still operated as a family owned operation. Their son Robert L. Forward, serves as President and their daughter, Judith M. Forward is the Vice President of the Corporation. Additionally, a mainstay in the community and Brown-Forward, Inc. is Robert J. Kohl. He started as a funeral director in 1957 and now serves as General Manager of our funeral home. Being a family owned and operated business allows us to operate in a service oriented mode, rather than in a corporate culture. Today, as in the past, we at Brown-Forward, view ourselves as a community oriented funeral home, serving all faiths, races, and religions, with caring funeral, memorial and cremation services. We view ourselves as part of the entire community, which we have been actively involved with for so many years. Our affiliations have been numerous, to include; Rotary, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, Shrine and Zonta.
Brunner, Mentor and Painesville, 800-228-4195 www.brunners.com
Brunner Funeral Home in Mentor, Ohio, was established in 1949 by Raymond V. and Helen L. Brunner. The original home was built in 1845 and has attained distinction as a local landmark. The acquisition of Brunner-Nixon Funeral Home in 1981 expanded our service-area to even more of Lake County. Built in 1858, the historic Gage building in Painesville, Ohio, was sold to the Nixon family in 1932 who started the original funeral home. The Brunner family purchased the funeral home in 1981 and began an extensive project to restore the building to its original condition as one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Painesville. Today, we are the funeral service professionals of choice for most Lake County residents. Our responsiveness, attention to detail and ability to create a special experience on any budget is why Brunner's is considered the finest funeral service professionals in our community. First class service is the hallmark of our business. This tradition continues on through the next generation with James Sanden, Nancy Brunner Sanden, Martha Brunner Deitrick and Charles Brunner and our children.

A lot has changed in the funeral profession since 1905 when Gustav H. Busch opened the Rehburg-Busch Furniture and Hardware Store in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood of Cleveland.
The store produced crafted furniture and, typical of that period, built fine wooden caskets as well as had embalming facilities. As time progressed, our family proudly embraced the funeral profession and serve to earn our reputation for bringing the highest level of funeral service to the community. One hundred years of strong, enduring achievement - A few examples of the "funeral firsts" our family brought to Northeast Ohio: In 1925, we were the first firm to build a "funeral home" at 4334 Pearl Road to be used only for funeral services; the first to have a staff of pre-arrangement counselors to assist families with advanced funeral planning at their residence; and the first to offer an "800" number to make it more convenient for family members outside of Northeast Ohio to get in touch. We have expanded to meet the growing needs of today's families and we are online. We'd like the opportunity to answer some of the questions you may have about death, dying and bereavement. In 1925, we were the first firm in this area to build a "funeral home" at 4334 Pearl Road designed to be used only for funeral services. This is the original Funeral Home location and has been extensively remodeled and continues to serve families today. It is under the careful direction of the Busch Family and their staff. The Funeral Home continues to exemplify the high standard of caring tradition families have come to rely on throughout generations. Over ninety-nine years of strong, enduring achievement has made the Busch Family a prime example of Northeast Ohio's area's family-business traditions. This foundation of professional quality and experience has been a benchmark through generations from Gustav H. Busch to J. Milton Busch to John M. Busch to his two sons, J. Mark and James H. Busch. Currently, Jim and Mark Busch provide the daily leadership of Busch Funeral and Crematory Services. Our facility has been extensively enhanced to continue providing the full range of services needed by the community. Your family will experience the exceptional caring of our staff, the warmth of the tastefully decorated interiors and the accommodations of the visitation rooms. Parking is easy. Please, we invite you to stop in and see for yourself. We are located at 4334 Pearl Road. We'd like the opportunity to answer some of the questions you may have about death, dying and bereavement.

On the southeast side of Cleveland, in an area now known as "Slavic Village," Florian J. Komorowski built a funeral home in 1939. The funeral home was built upon the belief that providing personal funeral services to the community was one of the most honorable professions a person could have. Over the years in response to the changing needs of families served the funeral home has been remodeled and expanded to provide larger facilities to accommodate visiting areas, funeral services on the premises, community rooms for luncheons, casket and vault selection room to truly become a full-service funeral home. David F. and Attorney James J. Komorowski joined their Dad, Florian in 1967 and 1969 respectively. David's son, Michael D. begun working with the family firm in 1991. That same year Komorowski Funeral Home expanded their service area through the purchase of Hyber-Domagalski Funeral Home located on Cleveland's Southside in the area now known as "Tremont." Edward Domagalski, who originally operated a funeral home on Harvard Avenue in the Corlett neighborhood, moved his business in 1951 to Tremont with a branch location in Maple Heights. The Professor Avenue location, adjacent to St. John Cantius Church, continues to operate today as Komorowski Funeral with a long history as Majewski Funeral Home, Hyber Funeral Home, and Hyber-Domagalski Funeral Home. In November of 2005 David, James, and Michael Komorowski expanded their service to families by merging with Tabone Funeral Home owned and operated by Martin and Alberta Tabone since 1968. Our combined family business will continue our long history of serving Greater Cleveland families with professionalism, trust and honesty.

Unique Sources for Irish - American Records: McGorray Brothers Funeral Home Records, By Richard B. Robertson
(Mounted May 25, 2000)
As a genealogist, I have often encountered especially difficult situations when attempting to find a particular family line. For many of us there are a variety of obstacles associated with researching our ethnic roots. Fortunately, when all the hours at a microfilm reader, writing to the National Archives, and trips on rainy days to the cemetery fail, there are other unique sources which offer the researcher valuable information. One of these unique sources can be found in funeral home records. As a manuscript processor, specialist in genealogical collections in the Western Reserve Historical Society Library, in Cleveland, Ohio, I feel privileged to be able to share with you one such discovery - the McGorray Brothers Funeral Home Records (MS 4805). The story of Mark McGorray (1829-1891), the founder of the McGorray Funeral Home, is a prime example of an Irish immigrant's success. Mark McGorray was born in 1829 and came to America in 1844 at the age of fifteen. He chose Rochester, New York, as his first home. As a young man, he traveled to California and, like so many others of that time, sought out his fortune. He ultimately returned to Rochester and, with his family, arrived in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1864. In Cleveland, he struggled as a cooper smith, a livery stable proprietor, and a furniture store owner. His first business location was located at 3040 Lorain Avenue. It was common practice in the nineteenth century for furniture makers to double as undertakers. The McGorrays struggled in this particular profession, but finally succeeded. He was nominated by the Democratic Party for several political elections, but never elected to public office. After Mark McGorray's death in the winter of 1891, his two sons, James W. McGorray (d. 1919) and Joseph (d. 1910) took over the reins of the family business. It then became known as the McGorray Brothers Funeral Home. The family continues to operate the business today. There is further specific family genealogical information contained within the manuscript register to the McGorray collection. The key to unlocking family tree secrets is often linked to one significant discovery, and there are many such opportunities to be found here. It is often difficult to consult Catholic diocese records, and it is equally difficult to find specific information that provides details about an elusive ancestor. These funeral home records hold a fountain of information for genealogical researchers. These records are predominantly the funeral accounts of Irish - Americans. There are also other ethnic backgrounds represented, including British, Italian, German, and Eastern European. The majority of these records are Roman Catholic/Irish - American. There are approximately 14,000 funerals recorded between the years 1876 and 1934, which are represented in the collection's twenty-eight chronologically - arranged volumes. A typical funeral record contains the name of the deceased, to whom the account is billed (in many cases this is a next of kin), date of death. residence at the time of death, age, sex, the cause of death, the date and location of the burial, and the attending physician and his address. There are also further clues contained within these records in the form of death certificates, receipts, and burial permits. Records from the turn of the twentieth century provide the greatest details for the researcher. The funeral home records in this collection are easy to research. The majority are also indexed alphabetically for quick genealogical reference. It is hoped that this unique genealogical source will inspire the researcher to indulge their creative side and seek out further unusual collections. Some of these will be explored in future reviews. Best wishes in your searches! Erin Go Bragh!! This article was originally published by the Western Reserve Historical Society.

We are a family owned and operated funeral home that has been caring for families in Cleveland and surrounding communities for over 110 years. Founded in 1890 by Anton Nosek, the firm was originally located in the old Broadway area of Cleveland. Upon Anton's death in 1935, his sons Yaro and Edward carried the business into its second generation. Yaro's son Norman succeeded him in 1952, expanding the firm to include homes in North Randall and Brecksville. Norman was proud to have his daughters, Norayne McCreery and Karen Gerber, continue the firm into its fourth generation from the Brecksville location which was established in 1969. Over the years, A. The current SCHULTE & MAHON - MURPHY Funeral Homes began with the merger of two individual funeral homes with a combined history of over 125 years of services to the people of greater Cleveland. The JOSEPH C. SCHULTE Funeral Homes, with a main office in South Euclid, Ohio and branches in Cleveland, Ohio and branches in Lyndhurst and Chesterland, Ohio was purchased by The MAHON - MURPHY Funeral Home of East Cleveland, Ohio to form the current operation in 1975. With service to the families and beautiful facilities to compliment those services, SCHULTE & MAHON - MURPHY Funeral Homes are currently noted as being one of Cleveland's finest and caring facilities. The completion of a completely new facility in 1992 Lyndhurst, Ohio heralded the addition of the Nicol-Wells-Kloss Funeral Home and The David Melbourne Chapman Funeral Service to the business. While each funeral home is family owned and operated, the combination of three leading mortuaries from the Greater Cleveland area allows for greater attention to details and services to families in their time of need. The business currently operates out of the main facility at 5252 Mayfield Rd., Lyndhurst, with the branch office and facility located at 4090 Mayfield Rd., South Euclid. There is also the availability of facilities throughout the Greater Cleveland/Akron areas to serve families who have come to appreciate the service, sincerity and quality of a funeral from SCHULTE & MAHON - MURPHY Funeral Homes. Today, the funeral homes offer complete services for traditional funerals, funerals followed by cremation, graveside services, shipping arrangements and direct cremations with memorial services. The directors are well-trained professionals who consider each funeral an individual tribute to the life of the deceased, and the relationship that we establish allows us to serve individuals of all faiths, ethnic backgrounds and traditional and non-traditional family life styles. Each funeral service we are privileged to handle becomes a personalized service to honor the deceased and a lasting memory for the family, relatives and friends. We are available 24 hours a day to answer any questions you might have regarding our services. We offer after the funeral visitation and services, and a beautiful community room for groups and clubs to hold the meetings or gatherings. We offer an extended display of caskets, vaults and all merchandise related to the funeral business directly in our Lyndhurst facility. This ability for families to arrange all aspect of the services they select right in one location has been greatly appreciated. We value the trust and confidence families have placed in us in the past, and our pledge to you is to reward that trust by providing an exceptional facility and services to match in your time of need. Our three family owned and operated funeral homes have served hundreds of families over the years. We have made many lasting friendships, and look forward to doing the same with you and your family.

The Vodrazka Funeral Home was founded at East 55th and Broadway in Cleveland in 1942 by John R. and Helen C. Vodrazka, whose dedication to service influenced their son Jack to become a Funeral Director. In 1974, upon the death of Helen C. Vodrazka, John retired, transferring the ownership to sons Lawrence and Jack, both Funeral Directors and Professional Embalmers (free-lance embalmers for other funeral homes). In 1977, the Vodrazka Funeral Home moved to Independence, while continuing to operate the East 55th and Broadway home. When Lawrence retired in 1997, Jack decided to close the East 55th home and focus all of his energies in promoting the Independence location. The Vodrazka Funeral Home continues to be a family business owned by Jack and his wife Dottie, who along with long-time friend, Eric Gleine (Funeral Director and Embalmer), provide a professional and caring environment for bereaving families. The Vodrazka Funeral Home has been serving the Cleveland community with professionalism and compassion for over sixty-five years.
