10:00 a.m. Missteps at Mine Run

Historian Frank Walker will give an overview of the Mine Run Campaign, discussing the Army of the Potomac’s General George Meade’s follies.

10:45 a.m. Break

11:00 a.m. Avoiding Disaster: Meade, Warren, and the Aborted Assault at Mine Run

Greg Mertz, Supervisory Historian for the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania County National Military Park, will discuss Federal V Corps commander, General Gouvenor K. Warren, as a counterpoint to Mr. Walker’s overview.

11:45 a.m. Lunch

1:00 p.m. Mischief and Mayhem, Retreat from Mine Run

Dr. Peter G. Rainey, Chairman of Civil War Study Group, Inc., will discuss the Army of the Potomac’s retreat from Mine Run and its impact on families and property in and around today’s Lake of the Woods, as well as the death of Lt. Col. Colonel Simeon Walton of the 23rd Virginia Infantry at the battle of Payne’s Farm.

2:00 p.m. Leave Locust Grove Middle School by bus for Tour of Payne's Farm battlefield

2:15 p.m. Tour of Payne’s Farm – Mine Run Battlefield

Conducted by Garry Adelman, Director of History & Education for the Civil War Trust. Participants may ride buses or drive individually, with parking at Zoar Baptist Church, 31334 Zoar Road (Rt. 611), Locust Grove. This is an outdoor tour that includes walking trails so dress appropriately.

5:00 p.m. Return to Locust Grove Middle School and Completion of Symposium
