“Finding Gems in Virginia’s Largest Regional Archives”

at Civil War Study Group July 22 meet

Elizabeth Daly of the Central Rappahannock Heritage Center’s board of directors will speak about the CRHC archives and its preservation of several hundred thousand historic documents and photos to the Civil War Study Group on Friday, July 22, at 10:30 p.m. at the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse lower level.

The CRHC is a treasure trove for researchers and is open to the public.

Located in the former Maury School building in downtown Fredericksburg, the Central Rappahannock Heritage Center is the largest regional archives repository in the Commonwealth. Almost daily, it continues to receive hundreds of items of historical interest that are donated by families and organizations in Central Virginia.

The Center’s staff and volunteers record and file individual items in more than 120,000 separate archives in a climate-controlled environment that will preserve them for future generations. It also has staff to assist in genealogy research.

Beth is a native of Ohio and has lived in Stafford County since 1980. Since her retirement from the Federal government in 2003, she has devoted her time to studying, researching and writing about local history. In addition to her work with the CRHC, she volunteers with the Stafford County Historical Society, Historic Fredericksburg Foundation and Master Gardeners.

In her July 22 presentation, Beth will emphasize Civil War archives. She will discuss the publication of the book "The Circle Unbroken: Civil War Letters of the Knox Family of Fredericksburg” that was co-produced by CRHC and Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. in October. Beth was a transcriber and researcher for the book and conducted extensive research on he Know family in addition to defining the more obscure vocabulary found in letters written in the 1860s. Everyone with an interest in history and historical research is welcome.

This presentation is open to anyone interested in history. For visitor admittance to LOW, inform Security at the main gate that you are attending the Civil War Study Group.
