Battle of the Wilderness Interpretive Panels
In 2011, Civil War Study Group Inc. President Pete Rainey led the development of three interpretive panels to memorialize events that took place within Lake of the Woods area during the May 1864 Battle of the Wilderness. The detailed markers include timelines, maps, graphics, and units that were involved. The panels were installed in November 2011.
Federal 6th Corps Field Hospital interpretive panel marks the location on the Spotswood family’s farm where a hospital of 24 tents was set up at the start of the Battle of the Wilderness. Battles inside Lake of the Woods interpretive panel shows the areas of fighting on the first day of the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5, 1864. Gordon’s Flank Attack interpretive panel details how General John B. Gordon’s Confederate forces moved to the right flank of the Federal VI Corps and charged into the Union troops on May 6, 1864.
