The Civil War Study Group, Inc. (CWSGI) solicits Civil War relics and artifacts for public display in a cabinet located at the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse in Locust Grove, Va. Relic items may be donated directly to CWSGI on a permanent basis, or the items may be loaned for a period of time with the contributor retaining ownership. CWSGI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, and your noncash charitable contributions are deductible based on fair market value.
Donated Items Valued under $500. Please complete the information requested in the CWSGI Artifact Donation Form and provide it with the item(s) on delivery to the CWSGI representative.
Donated Items Valued of $500 or More. If the total value of your donation is $500 or more and you wish to claim a tax deduction for the contribution, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires that Form 8283 be filed with your tax return. We request that you complete Parts I, II and III of Form 8283 and deliver it with the donated artifact(s). We will complete Part IV and return the form for your records as confirmation of receipt of the item(s)
Loaned Items. If the item(s) are loaned to CWSGI for the purpose of public display, the contributor/owner should continue to maintain personal insurance coverage for the value of the item(s) for the designated time period of the loan. We request that you complete the information requested in CWSGI Artifact Loan Form and provide it with the item(s) on delivery to the CWSGI representative.
If you wish to be a contributor to this effort, we will arrange to review the items, fill out the proper form, and accept delivery. All of the relics contributed are of historic value to our community, and CWSGI will provide a confirmation of the donation to the contributor either by letter or completion of Part IV on IRS Form 8283
