When to Enroll
Each students is given their own enrollment appointment time determined by the Registrar's Office. This can be found on MyUCLA. You may only enroll for classes during your appointed time.
How to Enroll
A tutorial video is available on Youtube.com.
Finalizing Your Study List
Students have until Friday of the second week of each quarter to make any changes to their Study List without financial penalty. For example, the Friday of the second week of Fall 2025 is October 10. These changes include adding/dropping courses, and changing grading basis (letter grade, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, and changing variable units). During Weeks 3 to 10 any changes will result in a fee posted to the BruinBill. Changes made after Week 10 require an enrollment petition, which are subject to approval by the UCLA Registrar.
Units
Students must be enrolled in at least 8 units to be considered full-time. If you are receiving a fellowship, please check back with your funder or funding unit to find out if they have a minimum unit requirement to keep your award. The minimum is typically 12 units. If you are offered a Graduate Student Researcher or Academic Student Employee position, you must enroll in 12 units to remain eligible for the position.
Enrolling below 8 units requires an approved blue petition. Please note that tuition is a flat fee per quarter, unlike undergraduate programs and Summer Sessions where tuition is largely based on the number of enrolled units. This means that enrolling in less than 8 units does not affect the cost of tuition. Thus it is in the student's best interest to enroll in at least 8 units each quarter. If it is your final quarter and you only need one more course to complete your degree, it is encouraged to take another course, even on Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis if the course allows it. Typically some students enroll in a language, dance, or yoga class to fill out their units during their last quarter and to take advantage of the fees they pay.
Students are allowed to enroll in a maximum of 18 units each quarter. Exceeding this maximum will require a blue petition.
Grading Basis
With the exception of COM HLT 286, 597, and 598, courses to complete your degree program course requirements and minimum units must be taken for a letter grade. This is the default enrollment selection, however be sure to check your Study List after you enroll to ensure that your required courses are being taken for a letter grade.
Student Responsibility
A registered student's Study List of enrolled courses becomes official at midnight on Friday of the second week of each quarter. Students are responsible for all courses and grading basis, as listed on MyUCLA, and cannot receive credit for courses not listed. Errors or omissions should be corrected before the quarter ends (before finals week). Study Lists should be checked after all enrollment transactions.
When planning courses for a term, students are responsible for avoiding class conflicts and avoiding conflicting or multiple same-day final examinations. See "Final Examination Policies on UCLA's Registrar's website.
Planning Aid
To create a visual class planner before your appointment time and without having to enroll in courses, log onto MyUCLA:
From the menu, hover over Features > Academics
Click on Class Planner
The following will only work when a time and day for each course is available
Hover over Search
Click on “Add a Class to Your Plan”
Choose your desired subject area and course
Choose the desired section, and click “Add a Class to Your Plan”
The course will now show up on your weekly timetable
Repeat Steps 3-6 to get a picture of a planned weekly schedule
Note: Working with the Class Planner does not enroll or drop any courses.
"The course I want is full! What do I do?"
If you find that a course you wanted to take is full and are worried that you will not be able to enroll, please check up on that particular course periodically, even up until the second week of the respective quarter, as space will highly likely open up.
If you are on the waitlist, your waitlist number indicates your position “in line”. If an enrolled student drops the course, you’ll be moved up. If you were #1 on the waitlist, you will be automatically taken off and enrolled.
If you are on the waitlist or could not get on the waitlist but are interested in taking the course, please email the instructor expressing your interest before the start of the quarter as well as attend the first day of class and speak to the instructor before or after class about getting enrolled into the course.
