Masters Students (Only MS Students)
* All incoming MPH students are required to take the 201 series offered by each department in fall and winter of their first year. All MPH & MS students much take the CHS 200 series in their first year.
Waiver Exam
Students who have completed courses equivalent to one or more of the required School Core Courses (see Masters Handbook) may take the appropriate waiver examination. Students who completed the UCLA public health undergraduate minor, please see below. Dates of each exam will be listed below once determined and will be emailed closer to the start of Fall quarter. A student who passes a waiver examination waives only the course requirement, but not the unit requirement, meaning other courses will need to be taken to meet the 60-unit minimum for the MS degree.
FULL WAIVER EXAM DETAILS WILL BE SENT BY THE CHS SAO ONCE AVAILABLE.
Biostatistics 100 - TBD
Epidemiology 100 - TBD
Higher level course substitution
Students wishing to take a higher level course(s) in lieu of the 100-level series can substitute the following:
Biostatistics 100 with 110A. Students should have at least 2 quarters or 1 year of calculus for 110A.
Epidemiology 100 with 200A, 200B, and 200C. Biostatistics 100 is an enforced requisite/co-requisite to enroll in Epidemiology 200A. The entire series must be completed to substitute EPI 100.
Students must file a blue petition for the substitution after successfully passing the approved course/course series. Taking the waiver exam is not necessary.
Important Note: Some departments strictly limit their 200-core sequence to their own majors. This may impact your chances in enrolling in those courses.
Courses Taken During Summer Session
Please select Summer Sessions 2023 and the Subject Area (Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Community Health Sciences, and Health Policy and Management) on the Registrar's Schedule of Classes page to see what courses are being offered this summer.
Doctoral Students
Doctoral students may only waive prerequisite courses if they have taken a similar or equivalent course in the past. Students must submit the relevant course syllabi along with a blue petition to get approval to officially waive out of a prerequisite course.
Students who completed a masters degree in the UCLA FSPH CHS department automatically waives the prerequisite courses if they were completed with a B- or better. A blue petition is not needed.
